Cycle parking in Edinburgh, where have we got to?

@gembo, youbet, it's a big improvement, not least because the old position used to have me handling my house/bike keys right above a drain, which has got to be trouble sooner or later!

"The original request is still, where would you like some racks.? Not please critique the rack installation to date. Try to stay focused and avoid moaning if you can. :-)"

    Says gembo.

In any case remarks here do not represent formal communication to the cycling team and if they do read the thread it should be keeping fully in mind that all people moan about things they are passionate about rather a lot.

Well, good feedback to the cycling team for a response within 24 hours to a parking suggestion I submitted.

    "Dear Snowy,

Thanks for your suggestion. I have made contact with the parks manager and asked if this would be acceptable. If so, I shall add to the next phase of installations due in the summer.

Please let me know if you think of any other locations that you feel would benefit from improved cycle parking."

I've just nudged about racks at the nursery and now run4it at Maybury. I don't know how long locations are kept on the future list but back in 2014 I was told it wouldn't be done before early 2015. In the meantime I'll keep locking to the fence and hope I don't arrive at the same time as another cyclist.

  6. Been told that there'd been a number of suggestions in addition to mine for racks on the Shore in the vicinity of Mimi's and Cafe Truva. They'll be installing some over the summer (but the exact locaction has yet to be decided).

Racks going in at Gilmerton crossroads now too.

@threefromleith oh good. We were struck by how few they were down that way too. (But then Vdeep offered to put all 4 of our bikes in the back of the restaurant, which made us wonder how safe they'd have been even if the had been racks....

  9. @Frenchy Great to get bike racks at Gilmerton Crossroads. I requested some in June 2014, must have been quite low on the priority list.

Quite a few of the new racks seem to be set at angles to the kerb (I think the three at Albany Street/Broughton Street junction are like that). I like this both from a practical (bikes in and out) and an aesthetic (more permeable for folk on foot) perspective.

I'd like to see some racks down at the bottom of Broughton Street, but that is predicated on a full redesign of that roundabout and the removal of all those bloody railings that corral pedestrians and block desire lines...

    @Stephan

I should maybe clarify that I meant that racks are apparently *going to be* installed.

Two racks are earmarked for "at Iceland" (I'm guessing this means by the entrance, round back) and two more are going in outside the Premier Supermarket.

My suggestions of outside the library, Society Hall and Community Centre are also being looked into, for possible installation later this year.

  12. @Frenchy Outside the Premier Supermarket were the ones added to the request list in 2014 after I mailed the council, with "probably" installation in the 4th quarter (of 2014)...

More racks at the library, community centre etc would be very welcome, but for the moment I'm overexcited that at least there will be two racks somewhere in the vicinity in the foreseeable future.

The last few times I had to use the railings at the Bingo Hall (lifting the bike onto the wall first) and the library, hopefully at a spot that wasn't in the way of wheelchair users.

And opposite the top of Bridge St on Porty High St. My requests of 2014 look like being implemented...

  15. Reminder: when you see new bike parking please also add it to OpenStreetMap.

If you are not confident with the OSM editor, then please leave a note (with the "speech bubble" icon from the toolbar on the right) to alert other volunteers who then can have a look. You can include the type and number of racks in the note.

Existing bike parking is shown as blue squares (in the "cycling" layer, use the "layer" icon in the toolbar to chose the layer) or as P with a bike symbol (in the standard layer). Notes are shown as red markers (make sure that "show notes" checkbox is checked in the layer selection tool).

The editor is actually quite intuitive now, so please do try it. Click on "edit", then use the "point" icon to add a point to the map. Then type "bicycle" in the search box on the left, and it will give you the option to label the point as "bike parking". At the end click on "save". That's basically all.

How long does it take for the map tiles to be updated to show new blue dots?

    Posted 7 years ago #
  17. @Klaxon I don't know. I think it may be a few hours. When you go into the editing mode, you should see everything immediately.

    Posted 7 years ago #
  18. @Klaxon Also, I believe the layers are updated individually and not at the same time, so you may see new features in the standard layer before the cycle layer or vice versa.

  19. @Klaxon: The bike racks in front of the Portrait Gallery that I added yesterday show up in the standard layer, but not in the cycle layer yet. In the standard layer they are also not yet in the closest zoom level.

  20. Thanks to everybody who already added notes to OSM! Some are in my area and I'm going to have a look soon.

Has anybody added Shandwick Place to the list? Near the tram stop end would be good.

I was meeting a retired colleague at the falafel shop on George IVth bridge, £3.95 for huge falafel wrap and can of mango nectar. The whole street is covered in racks on both sides. Edinburgh is a truly exceptional Scottish city for cycling in and parking yer bike.

The map you're probably looking at - which I'm going to guess is this one - isn't updated particularly quickly sometimes.

But this one updates quickly - hours or a day for most of the zoom levels often.

This is because of how Openstreetmap maps are produced. The first is provided by a private individual (whose business relates to such things) whereas the second one is the main Openstreetmap project map.

But bear in mind that the whole operation of Opensteetmap is a very different thing from things like Google Maps. The OSM project isn't really directly about presenting maps to the public, but just the collecting of the data... in the assumption that others will make the maps and run services based on this. Here's the very long list of maps and services which (if they show bike parking) will show/provide the data that people add.

@rbrtwtmn has beaten me to it. But the "default" layer takes live updates, and usually updates appear anything from a few minutes to several hours depending on the current load.

The cycle layer is a third party layer, and tends to get updated within a week.

That's four new ones on Porty Prom mapped; photos at: https://twitter.com/talkporty/status/735170229412601858

The one at the Community Garden (bottom of John St) will cause no end of conflict... It's right in the desire line.

6 Sheffield stands outside Ryries. Plus space on the fence but I assume that doesn't count for OSM?
