Cycle parking in Edinburgh, where have we got to?

    @fimm Thanks, have updated the Ryries rack on OSM.

    Fences are a bit complex, the manual says:

    bicycle_parking:informal: Notably large or well-used railings, fences, or other street furniture which nobody objects to having bikes chained to for short periods of time. Don't use for every railing or street sign, but only for long-ish runs used by lots of people. Judgement required!

    I'd say at this location, given that official parking is nearby, I would not add the "informal" fence parking, this is perhaps more for locations where it would be the only option.

    What do other local OSMers say?

    Sheffields being installed outside Maison Bleu (formerly Cafe and Cucina, Loopy Lorna's, Sherry's etc) this morning. Good work - very little cycle parking near the Morningisde shops.

    Ooooh...
    I suggested "outside Gorgie Road Co-op" and got the reply:

    "I already have this location noted to have 3 racks installed in the next phase of installations over the summer hopefully."

    So, the council is putting in a whole bunch of racks outside the MMW sainsbury's but for some bizarre reason, the workman have driven down MMW and plunked two vans partly on the ped side/partly on the grass, instead of just parking on the other side of the building.

    I thought it would be interesting to see what the distances from "Supermarkets" in Edinburgh to the nearest cycle parking is. So I used the OSM data to do this:

    I think for some of these there might be bike parking, but we just don't have it mapped.

    @Stephan Matthiesen - up until now I hadn't considered mapping "informal" bike parking. But I actually think there may be value in this. I think there will be places without formal bike parking, but plenty of railing space to use. But a note of caution, there are only 19 uses of this in the UK: Taginfo UK Bicycle Parking

    I've requested some racks at Meadowspot and had positive feedback from the Council.

    As background, the residents in the area have had issues with car parking of those attending predominantly "Saturday morning School Football". This has been exacerbated by work for the Royal Edinburgh Hospital and probably Craighouse too.

    One suggestion to alleviate this situation was to walk or cycle, however apart from a couple of street posts and a park bench, there is nothing to secure a bike to.

    After all is said and done the 'high street' supermarkets should all have far better parking than before. Many had nil.

    Sadly the big ones won't be touched for being on and surrounded by private land so up to the store manager to spend money.

    I've had confirmation that Maybury is being considered for racks in the summer. They've also confirmed that they will design them with a child friendly layout (eg trailers, tagalong etc).

    Oh and the awesome person doing so much hard work to make our lives better does read some of the posts on this forum. (Thanks)

    I've updated OSM with a few more I spotted today.

    Regarding the ones outside PY/Sainsburys - surely the QMile developer should have installed some as part of the planning permission. Hopefully CEC will do this in future, rather than waiting a year and then installing themselves

    More than a year!

    2 or 3 years back I contacted PY after signs appeared on the railings near them asking that bikes not be attached. I appealed to their Nordic sensibilities, and it appears bike racks were something that were supposed to have been put in by the developers from the very start. And then just weren't.

    New racks (four) spotted today on Montgomery Street (corner of Hillside Street); also East Fountainbridge (four). Spotted some others too, between Bruntsfield and Tollcross I think: can't recall name of street.

    I used one of what looked like a pair of fresh Sheffield stands outside Falko's in Bruntsfield this weekend. They will definitely increase the number of times I visit everyone's favourite German cake emporium. Good for business.

    Three racks apparently going in on Castlehill, beside The Witchery somewhere, but the Castle refuses to have any in the esplanade - even if they're removed during the tattoo.

    Loving the racks at Qmile. I was a member of the PureGym there for years and the biggest annoyance was the complete lack of any cycle racks - only one lamppost which could accept my d-lock, as I recall. Actually changed gym because of this in the end.

    Noticed about a million bike racks as I cycled through Bruntsfield today. Will require a careful survey for the map.

    New racks at Qmile very good as well and helped for a quick dive into the shop- but curiously when I visited there were about 10 bikes locked up to the PY railings and only 3 in the new area!

    @crowriver Nice positioning of the new Tesco racks at Roseburn to prevent the White Van Man I often see parking up on the pavement there to nip in for a snack :-)

    Hope they get the Shore racks in soon - there were bikes everywhere on Sunday as folks took advantage of the sunny weather to come down and visit the many fine establishments in the area :-)
