With any luck the car will be written off. As in the case of that one example from aseasyasridingabike who ran into a bollard resulting in a ruined engine even insisting that a sign should be put in place when one was already in place and refusing to admit he was in the wrong.

Blink and you'd miss it - an extra rack has been installed here on Balcarres St.:

Couldn't have told you that there was one there already. I think they have replaced the existing one, both silver now (I think).
Don't recall if they were positioned to allow two bikes for rack so I have added to OSM as total capacity for two bikes.

Show flat open for anyone who wants to be nosey. V. small bedrooms.

I think I saw two new Sheffield stands outside Hendersons on Hanover Street today. Somewhere on that side of the street, anyway.

Uni want to remove public parking x30 at Charteris Land and replace it with private locked cages.

Unless you're a keyholder this will reduce parking to almost nothing in the area.

    Hi Klaxon,

I am finalising the details for phase 2 now with a view to installations in October/November.

    Ooooh...
I suggested "outside Gorgie Road Co-op" and got the reply:

"I already have this location noted to have 3 racks installed in the next phase of installations over the summer hopefully."

    Posted 3 Months Ago #
    Hmmm.
No racks yet - part of those phase 2 installations I hope!

Well Sainsbury’s "murryfield" and Aldi "(Morningside?)" just along from co op gorgie road have good racks, I think the shore would be more deserving of a rack as does not have any if the council only have 1 rack left in the shed.

Once again shoutouts to Allan Tinto on the cycling team for being prompt and helpful in responding any queries. Absolute star!

    His message:

Please see attached the list of proposed cycle rack locations to be installed by end of this calendar year. This is subject to change but on the whole is the list I am working to.

I am still looking for new locations for cycle parking for the third phase and would be happy to hear any suggestions.

If you have any suggestions for 'Phase 3' the inbox has changed, it's now ActiveTravel@edinburgh.gov.uk

I've condensed his spreadsheet into an easier to read format with location and numbers only - but can forward on the full document if you want.

Phase 2 list - by end of 2016 calendar year.

    Very impressive list

Have emailed highlighting lack of racks on Market Street near City Art and Fruitmarket Galleries.

Friendly Police Officer suggested Waverley was nearest option. Visited, but all racks and alternative options fully utilised. (More obviously needed at Waverley, but this is outwith Counil remit?)

There used to be two racks next to the City Art Centre, but these were removed in 2014. Would be the obvious place to put some in, but it's possible that the reason for removing them still exists.

  18. Disappointing that the racks promised for the Shore 'by the end of the summer' aren't even listed.

Must look out the email I got and reply asking what's happened to them.

I always wonder Why is there no racks by Newkirkgate Shopping Centre as always lots of bikes in the square outside attached to the stairs signs and shop windows, also why at the bottom of Leith walk is there no racks as always lots of bikes.

There's a nice set of 5 covered and cctv'd racks at the exit of Newkirkgate to the car park.

I queried back at the start of summer about more in the precinct but it's private land.

  21. @Ed1 There are a couple of racks hidden away at the car-park end of the passageway at the side of Lidl. Most people don't know they're there, and even if they did - I suspect many wouldn't be confident leaving them out of sight there.

Perhaps Lidl could be convinced to include cycle parking in its plans for expanding: http://www.edinburghnews.scotsman.com/our-region/edinburgh/leith/council-grant-lidl-planning-permission-for-leith-expansion-1-4256029

I use these regularly when shopping at LiDL and they are excellent. The area is covered by CCTV too.

Many cyclists choose to lock bikes to the spiral staircase or other bits of street furniture close to the LiDL entrance instead. As indeed did I once upon a time, but the Sheffield stands near the car parking are a much better option.

    Posted 7 years ago #
  24. @crowriver I hadn't spotted the CCTV there. (Mind you, that's probably the point)

You can read detailed reviews of all Leith supermarket cycle parking here:

    http://greenerleith.org.uk/blog/leith-supermarkets-cycle-parking-facilities-rated-649

Remarkably little has changed in the past five and a half years! Except Sainsbury's Meadowbank now has cycle racks outside (but they're of a poor design).

    @jules:

    From Allan at the council:

"Market Street is already on the list with 5/6 due to be installed under the bridge when the space becomes free, 1 outside the City Art Centre, 1 outside the entrance to the station and 3 on Waverley Bridge at the Bus shop.

These are likely to be installed early next year."

Map of sites which should be getting new bike racks by the end of 2016. Lots in the city centre, not many anywhere else.

    Colours:
    Green 1-5
    Blue 5-10
    Purple 12-19
    Red 20+
    Grey unclear

Some of those appear quite odd but presumably there is more reason than because there is space. For instance 12-19 on a residential stretch of St John Road just before St John's Terrace. There's plenty space but is there any demand?
