CityCyclingEdinburgh was launched on the 27th of October 2009 as "an experiment".
IT’S TRUE!
CCE is 15years old!
Well done to ALL posters
It soon became useful and entertaining. There are regular posters, people who add useful info occasionally and plenty more who drop by to watch. That's fine. If you want to add news/comments it's easy to register and become a member.

If Historic Scotland let them do it, that is a great idea.
It's not IN the park.
CEC land.
There are various planning/'history' issues to resolve.
I presume it would be similar to the one on the other side of the park in Willowbrae? That's a nice wee track, but not sure it's used much - easier location to get to the one in St Leonards, would make occasional commutes on the cross bike fun!
Even though it is not in the park, HS could still put up planning objections, which might make things difficult. I hope they don't, but they could.
"would make occasional commutes on the cross bike fun!"
This one would include more 'challenges'.
You might like to 'discover' those steps in that old photo of the drying green.
"I hope they don't, but they could."
As you rightly pointed out on the blog, Kim, Historic Scotland don't really seem to like the thought of mountain biking - certainly I think it's technically banned on Arthur's Seat (though Land Reform, if riding 'reasonably' etc etc etc? Unless HS has a specific waiver). Shame really, but again just shows that we have some odd approaches to our 'parks' - quite a lot of scope to fit something in that would be invisible from below, and not cutting across walking routes etc.
I would have though HS's main objection to mountain bikes on Arthur's Seat would be erosion: it's bad enough with all the walkers, the gullies get bigger, deeper and more rocky every year.
Much of the area is currently used by rough sleepers and accumulates rubbish regularly.
Where will these folk go if it is turned into a bike park? Maybe they'll still sleep there...
Would be a bit of a short trail. Didn't know about rough sleepers, was used by dog walkers mostly. I used to wander there as a student. if bmx compatible that would be my preference. Quite good off an on road cycling in almond vale country park. Cities tend not to have many mountains, sugar loaf in Rio? We are lucky in Edinburgh with the various hills. In a parallel universe where cycling was the norm, there would be a mountain bike trail linking all the hills?
I presume it would be similar to the one on the other side of the park in Willowbrae?
Didn't know about this!!???
:)
"I would have though HS's main objection to mountain bikes on Arthur's Seat would be erosion..."
That's why it's better to do it officially - have actual trails that people do generally stick to (not really any off-pisteing at the likes of Glentress) - those trails properly built won't erode, and won't, obviously, cause erosion elsewhere.
"Didn't know about this!!???"
Yip, top of Meadowfield, though finding the start is a bit of an adventure (no signs anywhere indicating there's a short trail). Takes all of a minute or so to ride, but a few berms, wee jumps, couple of doubles.

Cycle Track
The cycle track in Meadowfield Park was opened by Kate Little of the Willowbrae Playpark Action Group, on Saturday 27th August. This was well attended, with many children bringing their bicycles and trying out the track. There were other activities for the children, all of whom seemed to be enjoying the occasion.
By the number of dogs present it looks as if the all-weather surface will also be used by dog walkers in bad weather. They will, of course, have to reach the track first; it starts at the top right hand corner of the park, beside the entrance to the Royal Park.

Parts of Arthur's Seat are an SSSI, however this confers no special access changes to the location. It is however an offence to undertake any activities that would be to the detriment of the site.
So you could legally be exercising outdoor access rights to cycle on the site and if you happened to do something that caused damage, you could find yourself in trouble?
Angus here (one of the people behind the proposals).
Just to clarify:
The bit of ground we're looking at is totally outside the park (so not SSSI/historic landscape/conservation area etc).
We are also super keen that any park we create doesn't underwhelm, as then people will get bored, and just wont use it (check out: http://evergreenmtb.org/colonnade/ )
To convince the council to hand over the land, we really need to demonstrate support from the local (biking) community, so come on down, and check it out this Saturday. Pretty Please?
