For those of us newbies who have lurked for ages, but only just joined, how do we spot the rest you? Is there a secret list out there listing all your bikes/user names?

Or, should I just shout out various names whenever I pass a bicycle on MMW until someone turns around?

Mainly the common spots are folk who have met either from a nominally organised ride or from the semi regular PY (peters yard) meets of which I think there is one this week.

First you recognise the colour combinations, then the bikes, eventually you recognise folk in civvies with out their bike.

PY = peters yard. Ok, that connection took me far longer than is should have.

Yeh if you can make a Peters Yard meet (this Friday from 07.30 until work calls) then come and say hello.

A good place to start is the Peter's Yard/Zazou coffee mornings, of which there is one on Friday as it happens.

Flickr's chock full of pictures of CCE types. Uberuce, chdot, kaputniq, blackpuddingonabike are pretty useful accounts to start on.

The vaguely followed rules of Spot are that is doesn't count if it's a pre-planned meetup, and the person who recognised the other first gets credit.

And yep, I'm fairly easy to Spot on account of big ginger beard, occasional trailer and for at least one journey a day have BRUCE written on my back in two inch tall letters.

Although this could be the start of an exciting 'describe yourself in five words' game. Eg:

Hey! Mr SRD is a runner in the most spotted category too. -- first spot was k'nik who reported bloke putting huge amount into panniers at wait rose. More recent spots include tagalong and bobike seat. Nowadays more commonly spotted on my tandem.

There's also the CCE top trumps thread which can be used to identify/spot, but may be out f date.

    Black Brompton; alternatively road bike.

  14. Bikes are generally the best way to start, as Steveo mentions.

Which means a Planet-X Kaffenback, with Carradice Nelson on the back, brown Brooks saddle and tools roll and brown bar-taped moustache bars is, more than likely, me. I'll occasionally commute on one of the other bikes, but that's the 99% steed.

Very yellow bag, silver helmet, sand 3/4 long trousers. I'm afraid the bike (Giand road) is too generic to really notice it.

What's this PY ride thingy? Might be interested - if it's not completely pishing down.

    SS blue genesis.
    Camo shorts. Never trousers.
VERY bright lights front and back.
    White or Orange jacket.
    Red helmet.
Plus i am criminally good looking so that will give it away immediately.

Surely there is a game for us newbies to play of cycling an 'unusual' bike round Edinburgh and wait to see how long it is until we are spotted?

I've been riding unnoticed for a couple of months now so maybe my bike isn't sufficiently envious or interesting to be worthy of a mention (I think it is but I'm bias) - or maybe me not commuting to city centre makes it a harder spot.

Judging by the differing driving behaviour around me, I'm either invisible or naked.

SS Yellow Genesis, Green Carradice camper, brown Brooks saddle, blindingly bright front and rear lights, really cool selection of cycling caps......

p.s. there is an easier way to spot Uberuce - he does bog snorkling in the canal late at night ;-0

Sorry, Uberuce, but I picture 'The Pirate Captain' when I read your name. Must be the similarity in the luxuriant beard stakes. BTW has anyone else read the Gideon Defoe books?

Dont know how to post picture but it's him to a tee! Oh, and of course there's the attraction to water too.

    See if this works
