Is there a (hidden?) link somewhere that would enable me to jump to the first unread post in a thread on any given thread in this bulletin board? Many, *many* years ago I used to run the web site for an SFL club and we had a forum where you could do this. It was a very useful utility as it meant people didn't have to remember where they had previously read up to, and they saved time by just jumping straight to the latest unread posts with zero hassle. I believe this CCE forum is the Wordpress bbForum, and Wordpress journals are pretty awesome, so figured (a) it must be possible, and therefore (b) I'm totally failing to see how to do it.

Does anyone know if this is possible? I tried to use the "favourites" feature to do it, but alas, I don't think that's it.

Can't help you, but one useful secret is that if you click on the 'time' of the most recent post, it will take you to it. (ie end of thread).

SRD may have the answer you need.

You might want to try the RSS feeds (near top right).

    Edit -

Links removed as were 'admin only'

@SRD - Ah! I hadn't realised that was a link. That's certainly a good tip, thanks for that. Alas, doesn't fully resolve the issue, but better than not knowing it :)

@chdot - I may be being an idiot here, but those links seem to take me straight to the front forum page? As in, there's no difference?

I've done a bit of googling to try to see whether there are plugins for this, but there's quite a lot of discussion from other people who use the bbpress forum and it doesn't appear that it is currently possible. Which is a shame, because it's a killer bit of functionality.

No it's me, those links seem to be 'admin only'

    Which is a shame!

Will the timestamp links be enough?

I like bbPress, but there are always things 'missing'.

I think I've got 'all' the useful plug-ins - image resizer doesn't work as well as I would like.

I'm surprised how few new plugins are developed.

In the absence of anything else, the timestamps will need to do. It's certainly something that will speed things up a bit.

I'd never heard of bbPress before using this site, tbh. The one I used to use was phpBB, but anyone using it these days is subjected to constant spam, as people from a particular part of the world have staff who manually sign up for accounts and post spam messages, therefore it's next to impossible to combat it in any kind of automated way. From a quick look at bbPress, it uses Akismet, I don't know how well that fares against manual spammers, but maybe these spammers only bother going for phpBB sites for some reason.

Anyway, thanks for the responses, it seems there's no current way of doing it, but maybe something will crop up in the future. I'll keep my eye out.

Same here - though I'd never admined phpBB.

I looked at all the free forum software I could find. Didn't seem much point in paying as all (?) it would mean is more 'facilities' to learn - or ignore..

I was reassured because it was an offshoot of WordPress which I have used extensively and (mostly) been pleased with.

It's inevitable that the forum software has fewer users than WP so isn't being developed as much.

Generally spam isn't a problem as all posters have to be registered.

This used to be automatic and the filter used to catch the Chinese (etc.) ones as "Bozos" but the number I woke up to each morning (time zone difference - was surprised they only seemed to work one shift!) eventually got ridiculous, so registration is now only by direct email request.

Still getting more new members than new posters though!

(Better that people show enough interest to bother - and are ready to post when they have something to say/ask.)

The spam users I've seen on phpBB were from Eastern Europe. Interesting that your spammers are from a different culture entirely... I'm sure someone could do a PhD on why that is, no doubt.

Out of interest, is this forum using bbPress 1 (standalone) or bbPress 2 (plugin inside Wordpress)?

    Standalone.

Didn't have a self-hosted WP blog to add a forum to.
