Never understood parents who put kids at risk through driving/parking/abandoning their cars.

We have the same issue at Abbeyhill primary, also in a cul-de-sac (two, in fact). Interestngly last week the head teacher sent a memo to all parents threatening to call in the police unless the 'inconsiderate and dangerous parking' ceases. No sign that it has though.....looking forward to police enforcement in the new year!

It's the lack of enforcement that's the problem. East Lothian council have put various speed and parking restrictions around my local primary school but everybody just carries on driving as badly as usual as there's little or no enforcement. The police did their, as far as I can tell, annual enforcement visit recently and announced it in advance via the school newsletter which somewhat ruined the effectiveness.

They could put those auto-bollards in to forcibly keep the cars out, and give us some youtube giggles. Or better, just ban the cars permanently.

However it's very encouraging that they're going in the right direction. All they need to do now is make that little conceptual leap - the one that says "hang on - cars aren't necessary in this street!"

It's not so long ago that councils wanted to cover the place with new motorways. Remember the Western Relief Road for instance? A motorway linking the M8 to Lothian Road, ISTR. And then there was the plan to have a motorway blazed right through Tollcross and swoop over the New Town on stilts, or something.

    This is entertaining reading -

The huge Goldbergs department store (remember it?) was built at Tollcross in anticipation of traffic from the planned motorway.

Ah yes, Goldbergs. I remember it being abandoned for a long time. Scouted it once as a possible location for an arty party. Now some faceless bank offices and student flats...

John Beattie asks : Is it a good idea to ban cars outside schools to clamp down on the school runs? Call Kaye 0500 929500 Text 80295

  9. They have a way of asking questions to garner specific responses. So "Is it a good idea to ban cars outside schools to clamp down on the school runs?" is really aimed at getting people het-up about 'why shouldn't I drive?' etc etc etc whereas...

"Is it a good idea to ban cars outside schools to improve the safety of our children?" gives a slightly different slant to things.

Ah Goldbergs, that's where my fear of Santa came from.

I hope this is introduced to Campie Primary at the end of our street. Every morning drivers go up the cul-de-sac beside the school to drop their children off at the nursery gate despite that being the only way in for everyone whether walking or cycling. The worst offenders - the people who blocked the entrance and exit for the special needs transport - got notes on their windscreens but it hadn't stopped in the five years I took my children there.

Never mind the police - you just need an enterprising Blue Meanie to work out the opportunity and there you go... There's always one round Porty parts come nursery pickup times!

The Hootsmon has taken a less than charitable view:

'Shock' indeed. Nor is it the first.
