As mentioned in BigJack's thread, I reckon this idea has enough traction to get another thread and feline herding attempt.

The Problem: Some of us are unsure of how effective our hi-viz and rear lighting is, others are unsure if their front lights are too bright, especially on off-road paths. Also: both.

The Solution: We, ah, kill the Batman.

Okay, the Actual Solution: We meet in a city(provisional candidate: Edinburgh), swap hi-viz and bikes, then ride towards each other from a reasonable distance along an off-road path. This means dynamo-lit persons can see their LEDs emitting in anger.

We also have at least one car present. I imagine insurance issues might make it impractical for anyone but the owner to drive it, but sitting in the passenger seat(maybe even the back) ought to give a functionally equivalent experience of seeing how your lights and reflectives look from behind the wheel.

At the risk of looking really lazy, I think Harrison Park is a pretty good spot. There's an inky stretch of canal just west of it, and the block I happen to live in has a good quiet street that's amenable to the car test, in that with a lookout at the top you can safely* reverse back up it to repeat that part of the testing conveniently.
It might turn out that simply sitting with the lights on while your bike model rides round you tells you everything you need to know so that may prove moot.

*if that's not legal, it's a small block, so doing loops isn't too silly.

The Date: I will say Monday the 3rd since the weather is forecast as good then and poor Tuesday. The time, if we choose Harrison Park as the venue, is pretty open-ended since I'm a sad bike obsessive with Tron nostalgia and no life so I'd be happy to malinger in the park taking long exposure light-trail photos of people doing this for around two hours. Any time from 6.20 onwards suits.

Is monday 3rd not same time etc as Roibeard's suggested ride on Leith walk?

Revision: depending on a catheter, I might be too busy trying to find a good place to buy a scale model of the right half of Freddie Mercury's moustache on Monday to do this. I've heard there's a place on Leith Walk that specialises in reproductions of Iranian rhapsodiser facial hair, but is hard to spot and only open Mondays, so that's where I'll be.

Watch this space, persons. I'll pencil another date in once the forecast covers it.

If its late enough that I can get across from Glasgow (half sevenish) I'd be interested...

6ish onwards works for me. I've got a new light to try out and some home-made hi-viz embellishments to my garments. Will clean the spoke reflectors on one wheel to compare with road-dirty ones.

Bruce, still on 3rd? I am up for this, time would be fine by me too, straight from work.

Nein, the 3rd would clash with the Leith Walk flash ride, and now the forecast for the 4th appears to be clear, so I'll say 4th, same time.

My sister's agreed to supply the car and driver, so that part's settled.

Given how often our paths cross, it ought to be trivial to arrange a light jousting atwixt us. Any night you expect to be on Spylaw at 6.10-ish, just throw a text at me.

Great idea Uberuce but only the careful and considerate are likely to attend. I think the main culprits with the super bright front lights are just a bit dim(pun intended), and don't actually look at where the main spot of the projected beam end up ie on the road a few metres ahead of the bike and not straight ahead or pointing upwards at oncoming eyes. I also think the industry, shops etc are as much to blame for selling lights which don't conform to any standards whatsoever. Compare the British situation with the German cycle lighting regulations. Prior to flickering LEDs it was much easier here with a 3W maximum power rating for a front light with a filament bulb.

Precisely. It's important to check that one is being as careful and considerate as one intends.

Yarp. My model of CCE usage is people who think that at least some other fellow amateur cyclists are more knowledgeable than them. The Dunning-Kruger effect is sparing us the know-it-alls. Sparing us here on CCE, I mean. When we have to share the road with them you get this: http://citycyclingedinburgh.info/bbpress/topic.php?id=9030

@Darkerside You'll not have had your tea, so if you're coming over, I'll have you round to mine for feeding before I release you back into the wild. I eat meat but mostly don't, so my tasty recipes are all eco-vegan-wank. Toss me a PM with any requirements.

Delightful as that sounds (and genuine thanks for the offer!), I'm regrettably already committed to stuff this week.

I'm sure I'll cross paths with someone at some point for some, ah, joint flashing.

Planning to attend tonight around 6.

Where in Harrison Park are you planning to meet?

Will I just seek out the brightest light or moving Christmas Tree effect?

Would have liked to have shown up but am full of cold and generally miserable so don't really want to be standing around in the cold. So I might pop by and infect you all, or I might just go home.

Jeepers, I forgot all about this in my rush to get home and out of the rain. Better get out there and shoo anyone else away.

It appears to be clear of waiting cyclists. I did see a pug in a hi-viz coat and blinky-LED collar, though.

Apologies to anyone who braved the minging weather. There is a slight problem in that I have a mind like a sieve and no internet access all afternoon, so I better rethink the organisation side. For example,' not having one' is a mistake.

The weather looks terrible for the next while, so barring private arrangements I guess we'll put this one on the backburner for a bit.

Could the manufacturers of lights not add a bevel to the light fitting to ensure that whatever you did it would always point down and to the left, or down and to the right in countries driving /cycling on RHS?

gembo, lots of the magicshine (and clones) and some of the lupines have those chunky elastic bands - when I got mine I thought it would be a rubbishy solution, but it is pretty robust and keeps the light pointed where I want it - and its easy to take off / swap to another bike etc.

My old cateye lights had a pretty good solution - the up/down angle could be locked in on the main mount, and the 'clicky' bit on the actual light mount moved left and right so you could get it where you want.

Brrr. Two of us turned up, but it must be said that the weather was far from clement. Hail / freezing rain was not tremendously pleasant.

Since we were jousting with fairly recent high power LED lights, the inevitable conclusion was drawn that yes, these things are best directed at a point no further than 6 feet in front of the bike. Higher than that, and you would be disorienting the oncoming rider and it would not make for an easy pass on a narrow path such as the canal.

The cheaper lights tend to merge the flood+spot functions so you can't turn off the flood effect independently, so the whole unit needs to dip significantly. It's probably the main disadvantage.

Rear lights on display were much brighter than average... but simply don't cause an issue.

**edit** We called it a (cold n wet) night at about 6.30 so apologies to anyone who turned up after that.

Uberuce: Hey! When we met at the Leith Walk thingy I know you said about the light-thing, but I thought it was still in its formative stages: I didn't realise you had a full-plan/date all sorted. Although I'm fairly content with my lighting arrangements - I sometimes dip my light on the canal, and I figure they're quite bright so hopefully work on the road (in combo with high-vis and sticky reflective yellow bits on my bike).

<crosses fingers and hope that everyone notes the dates on the 1st posts in this thread>

Given this didn't happen last winter, now that it is getting dark again, how about giving it another go?

We have some relatively good weather for the next week according to the wizards at the beeb. Though you could make a case for doing one in the wet/mist to really test visibility.
