The comments make more sense than the article.

Does it factor in the (ever reducing) carbon footprint of production and shipping of the bike, tyres, tubes, clothes etc etc etc

    As one commentor puts it:
"What's the carbon footprint of pointless articles based on totally flawed logic about carbon footprints?"

    Quite.

What's the carbon footprint of carbon fibre?

Lay it down and run it over with a bus we'll find out.

How many pencils did it take to make the carbon fibre?
How many trees did it take to make the pencils?
How much carbon could those trees have absorbed?
Now reminding myself of Asterix and Cleopatra cover:

which used for those of you that don't already know:
14 litres of indian ink, 30 brushes, 62 pencils, 1 hard pencil, 27 erasers, 1984 sheets of paper, 16 typewriter ribbons, 2 typewriters (oooh retro), 366 pints of beer

I think I like the beer bit best ;)

Learn French with Asterix was a favourite interactive CD for my beige G3 Mac. Very useful if you ever found yourself transported back in time to Roman occupied Gaul;-)

'Two people cycling along using energy from cheeseburgers is equivalent to those same people sharing a ride in an efficient car.'

But then these same people in the car may well use their 'efficient car' to get cheeseburgers later...

It's a little-known fact that a car on a congested road can produce as much as three times the amount of CO2 as the same car travelling at a steady speed.

It's a little-known fact that the CO2 emissions printed in most car ads are not achieved till the engine is warm and running in ideal conditions. Driving a mile to MacDonalds will not be that efficient in an efficient car (whatever that is).

What I think is silly is trying to claim that people eat an extra X calories to compensate for their ride in, and then using that as the basis of some sort of comparison.

Whether I run in, cycle in, get the bus or drive, I have two Shredded Wheat for breakfast. The only valid comparison is between the construction & ongoing costs of motoring vs cycling, whose conclusions are no secret.

In fact, with something like 1:2 men and 1:3 women overweight, it is more accurate to imagine that those who cycle reduce their burden on state healthcare (itself a large carbon emitter) rather than having to eat more.

1/2 women 2/3 men overweight or obese.

    What a stupid article.

Probably worth linking to this article on the BBC containing more C02 emission stats from the same author.
