When I was chatting to the STV jounralist I dragged up a memory of a New York street that got redeveloped and, as usual, sales went up etc etc etc cos it was more 'livable'. I wasn't making it up was I? I;ve had a search and can't find the post with the picture of what was done and so on!

New York Street with Sales Up?

The idea to see if it was possible for the Edinburgh of the future to give space to pedestrians (and cyclists) was one that came up at a PY breakfast.
My 'flawed' example was the Grassmarket. This has basically calmed the whole area down by expelling cars to park elsewhere. Unfortunately all the remaining vehicles have been been forced into the road by the Apex Hotel. This includes bikes of course and no attempt was made to encourage cycling in this area. Despite this people still choose the route as a cross town route - some just riding on the area beside the re-cycling banks to get round the gridlock. Not ideal but the area is usually devoid of people in morning.
From memory the pubs and retailers there were originally concerned about vehicle access but are now pleased with the result.SRD wondered if takings were up. AFAIK it does ok with the only business that is struggling being Avalanche.
