Had to get new 'rego' for car this week and with the tag came a helpful breakdown. Although you get the usual tax em and insure em BS from drivers, there is a slightly more direct connection between what you pay and the amount needed to run the roads. To quote the NZTA 'The fee helps to pay for roading projects and road safety programmes'.

But what was interesting was how much was the actual licence, and how much was the ACC Levy.

This was just a 3 month licence as I'm getting it out of sync with the six monthly warrant of fitness. But from this only about $10 goes to roading.

Nearly $50 goes to... The Accident Compensation Corporation. What this is is the national no-fault insurer.

No-one has personal liability here, you can't sue anyone in case of an accident, be that sporting/car/workplace, so there are no 'if there's a blame, there's a claim' type lawyers here.

But if you do have an accident the ACC pays for support and compensation. You pay for this through levies on various things (salary/rego/fuel etc)

What I though was interesting is that the accident coverage for the roading, is nearly five times that of the actual roading charge. For motorbikes it's even higher: Motorcycles 601cc+ $426.92 pa.

So, not really paying much for the roads, but paying a sh*tload for all the accidents you cause/have.

Probably not helped by the fact that kiwis are chronically bad drivers! Though some of the roads in the hinterlands down south have some serious design issues...

Just realised the point I was trying to make. Is that effectively here we have risk-based road pricing. Which to a *degree* could include cyclists.

But then again guess it's the net benefit overall and per capita accidents, so would probably still be zero rated.
