AA Misleading on Petrol Prices?

    Edmund King (who is a cyclist and generally a lot more sensible than the AA media relations rent-a-quote lot) has tweeted...

    "Petrol 2.75L dearer in 2012 than 2011. AA Fuel For Thought report"

    Interesting, I thought, and clicked through, only to find... 2012 has, on average over the whole year, been more expensive than the similarly averaged cost in 2011. The article actually states that fuel prices are 'almost' back to what they were at the start of the year (being lower just now) so fuel is at this moment, cheaper than at this point in 2011.

    What I also find odd is that almost everything will be more expensive averaged over 2012 than averaged over 2011 because of inflation!

    If they did index link it, that's an increase of what, 1.8% ?

    If they didn't index link it, the price of fuel has fallen in real terms (this is my experience) because inflation is ~4% IIRC?

    Index linking it still wouldn't tell the whole story, since it depends who's buying the fuel and how an individual's salary reflects RPI or similar.

    I suspect for many public sector workers the fuel is actually about the same price, because their annual pay increases and any performance bonuses have been reduced to nearly zero. Everything else whose prices have gone up thanks to inflation does becomes more expensive, and because there is only so much money to go around it feels as though fuel is also more expensive.

    I think I bought some petrol in October, but I can't remember.
