@Kaptunik What are 'wheel-gutter strips' that you mention on the path?
Posted 11 years ago # -
Innocent already icing over after a heavy dew and temp drop. Be careful and let's hope there is the return of the gritter tomorrow- he was here this morning but only at 8:15

@Puzzle. They are my nemesis.
Searching for 'rumble' 'rumblestrip' 'rumbles' and probably some other variants will bring up the opinions of Kappers, Nelly, ThreeFromLeith, myself and various other Gylists. Might want to have some milk or other base handy to neutralise any excess vitriol seeping from your monitor.

Puzzle, K was referring to tactile paving flags of the continuous raised strip type for hazard identification.
Interestingly enough, the kind used by CEC on the Broomhouse cycle expressway, and most other places, appears to be the Hazard Warning Paving flag placed longitudinally on the cycle path side and laterally for the pedestrian side. There is also a Cycleway paving flag that comprises half as many raised half-rods, but I've never seen it before. They say it's for use where the pedestrian and cycle paths are not segregated by height.
KB says cold, cold cold!
mkns, really sorry to hear about your spill. Broken fingers really hurt. :-(

The stuff on NCN7 somewhere between Troon and Irvine looks to be the Cycleway Paving stuff, having four raised weals per slab...
IMAG0622 by wingpig, on FlickrIcefrost at the edges (and puddles) of Porty High St and Seafield Road, including over the bridge between Matalan and McDonald's. Seafield Road-side off-road path frosted all over but still quite grippy. There was a gritting lorry hiding underneath the bridge leading to Fillyside Road.

Yes, that's the stuff. If you go right to the Edinburgh Park end of the Broomhouse path, you'll find the stuff with wide spacing for the longitudinal strips. Photo below, even if the installation is incredibly poor, with large, badly filled gaps all round.
What a bloody trambles! by the Magnificent Octopus, on FlickrThe rest of the path has simply turned around the tactile pedestrian paving as seen on the right in the photo above, which has a much narrower tread spacing. If you catch it at the wrong angle when it is whet, it has a tendency to throw the wheel to the angle of the ridges. This is greatly emphasised by studded tyres, which seem prone to hunting and will probably conform to a line drawn in chalk.

EH12 is black ice on the residential roads and shared use paths. I came off my bike 50 metres from home on a patch 'o the black stuff, and have a broken finger to show for it. Typing this is pretty painful. I think I'll take the car tomorrow.
Ouch!
> big makes a note to tread lightly tomorrow
As the wife still insists on dicing with death rather than go slightly slower, I feel obliged to offer you her studded tyres if you fancy them (pretty sure they will fit). They weren't expensive (<£20) and will put paid to such issues.

-5 degs here. Not sure whether to cycle today.

-3 in Falkirk this morning, side streets are dodgy and icy but the main routes seem nice and clear.
Posted 11 years ago # -
On the bus! Not so much fun though.
Posted 11 years ago # -
Rest day for me. Be careful out there!
Thanks for the info on the 'rumblestrips' I'll watch out for them.

Canal froze over last night.
Posted 11 years ago # -
Cold.
Actually felt OK Bromptoning this morning and am seriously contemplating getting the road bike out and doing the long commute tomorrow. Thin, slick tyres. Am I mad?Posted 11 years ago # -
The braids are a nice mix of snow, ice and crusty mud. Much fun on the mtb with ice tyres. Though I did just kill my freehub.

"Though I did just kill my freehub."
Maybe it's frozen (seriously).

There are some of those tactile paving slabs on a short section of cycle path I sometimes use in Stirling.
I have encountered a small amount of slippyness before, but it's never been that bad, but I think that is because there are only two of them to cross unlike the six in a row on the Broomhouse path.

The tactiles were put in by the 'tram' people.
The path has not been adopted by CEC.
Tram responsibility is now completely a CEC responsibility...
The path 'should' be adopted later this year -
"We are planning to undertake remedial works on the path parallel to the railway/tram with a view to getting this adopted once the tram works are substantially complete."
If you have helpful suggestions might be worth sending them to cycling@edinburgh.gov.uk perhaps with Broomhouse Path in the subject line.

Thin, slick tyres. Am I mad?
Yes.
Posted 11 years ago # -
"Thin, slick tyres. Am I mad?"
Probably.
Depends where and when.
If it's not particularly thick frost/ice then, high pressure, tyres can 'squeeze' through to the tarmac.
But...
Should be OK on nice gritted main roads.

F..f.f.freezing down the Cramond foreshore this morning. The whole experience helped by the bridge cable on my front canti slipping leaving me with only a rear. Oddly, I warmed up on the path up from Chancelot Mill when I had to stop to fix a puncture.

@Insto
I think you meant to put that in the 'I had a lovely ride today' thread...

The downhill part of Arthur's seat is very Icey today. I Discovered this whilst braking at speed approaching the roundabout. I went sideways with both wheels locked up, god only knows how I stayed on the bike but I did ( probably due to my lightening fast reactions and superior bike handling skillzz ) any way I didn't attempt a second lap....... ;-)

KB is just about to hit zero!
http://www.geos.ed.ac.uk/abs/Weathercam/station/24hours.html
Did a crosstown ride this morning. Even the Road (Blackford) I expect to be icy had been gritted.
Slightly too cold for my gloves to keep my fingertips warm.

"Should be OK on nice gritted main roads"
Route is up Lanark Road, out through Balerno, right at Kirknewton Airfield, down through Kirknewton, East Calder, Livingston. According to the Edinburgh City Council and West Lothian Council maps online, all those roads should be gritted (except the one outside my flat!)
We'll see.

This morning at 6.30 it was extremely cold (-3) - but as always here, the absence of wind was a bonus.
I wont make last nights mistake - thinking it didnt 'look' cold and removing a layer and skull cap before setting off - yikes !
Posted 11 years ago # -
Forecast is for higher wind speeds from tomorrow onwards, without much increase in temperature. Ice and 20mph winds on Friday. "Feels like -10 to -13". Oh joy.
Posted 11 years ago # -
Off to airth tomorrow, will use train twixt edin parkmandnpolmont. Then quite easy through Grangemouth. But, return on Friday looks a toughie

Three wheels good today. Hase trike with electric assist did the hill yesterday on it's first test ride. Cars in the park hated it though! Too fast and slow at same time. And held up a queue going up the single track. Took client on the path today for her own safety
I rode on two though as Innocent had warmed up a bit by 3pm. Must have been above freezing.
