Came home last night around 1030PMish and it was pretty thick. Had the studs on, came through Grassmarket from Lothian Road and then up Candlemaker Row. Bike felt solid, excellent snow performance from the tyres. Came down a very snowy MMW and then couldn't resist some loops around the Meadows through the snow. A 10-foot tall rabbit like the one in Donnie Darko was under construction.

If it freezes tonight (and the chances are it will) the tow path west of the aqueduct will be a nightmare. I came home along it at about 4.30 tonight, and it was an unspeakable mix of black ice and rutted freezing slush. It was passable with studded tyres and care.
If it freezes solid tonight it will be almost unrideable, I reckon, regardless of what tyres you have.

After 2 days of driving, because the weather forecast lied about how much it was going to snow, and thus having to put up with the Queensferry Road nightmare, I've had enough, and will cycle in to work tomorrow, assuming the cycle path from Silverknowes up to Craigleith and then on to Ocean Terminal is likely to be useable for 700x25 road tyres... has anyone been along it today and can therefore suggest how bad it's been?

I wouldn't if I were you. The forecast is for sub-zero temperatures until 2pm tomorrow. Lots of ice very likely.

On the + side, look at those wind speeds, should feel decidedly warmer than the last couple of days.

I'm less concerned about whether it feels cold: not usually a huge problem with the right clothing. However I would suggest cycling on 25mm road slicks on potentially lethal ice is not a good idea.

Just trundled home from the Golden Rule quiz. It's very damp everywhere, no signs of frosting or black ice yet. But a lot of surface water, so if it does chill down over night it might be dicey first thing.

Harrison Park had me wishing I'd ridden home. No falls, but wet compacted slush on the paths doth not a happy Uberuce make.

@greenroofer Cheers for the tip - think I'll avoid the towpath on Wed's commute. Still not refitted the Marathon Winters since Glentressing at the w/e - got distracted tonight by going skiing instead.

Had considered the Brompton, but thanks for the heads up chaps. Spiky tyred tourer it is tomorrow!

Probably too late to be of use mkns, but the path has stayed ice free this whole time. Seems to be getting regularly gritted as well as moderate temps.

If anything I thought this morning was better than yesterday. Thermometer at home was showing 0.7 compared to 1.0 yesterday.

Towpath now ice-free between Meggetland and Gogar Station Road. I can't be sure, but it looked this evening as it might possibly even have been GRITTED out by Wester Hailes.
It was dark, and too cold to stop, but there were definitely deposits of something on the path and I've got a salty deposit on my shoes.

Here in Assen in the present day we have three tracks on some residential streets which were not 100% cleared of ice this week. Those either side are made by the infrequent motor vehicles, while the most distinct track is that in the middle, made by the many cyclists who use this route."

More than 100 dog teams had been due to compete in the event, which started on Saturday in perfect conditions. But overnight rain left large patches of ice on the course, making it too dangerous.
