Very cold in Dundeh earlier this evening, very clear sky with bright stars. Ice had already formed on the puddles left over from this morning's rain. Supposed to be chilly tomorrow in Edinburgh.

Icy patches where water had run over the path heading down into Falkirk this morning, and frozen over puddles on the canal towpath. Fair wakes you up in the morning, cycling over ice next to a canal full of freezing cold water :-o

Touch of frost in Balerno
No David Jason yet

Very icy this morning. As I was loading up the tandem, noticed a big patch of ice just across the road, looked like someone poured a bucket of water across the tarmac last night: like glass. Along comes a young woman in fashionable plimsolls, whoosh, straight onto her backside. (Expletives uttered are censored but my boy heard them). Undignified and embarassing, but otherwise okay, or so she said when I enquired.

It's gone below freezing the last couple of nights.
Presume not causing any problems(?)
Are paths still getting gritted?
Posted 11 years ago # -
The roads have been fine, which is nice since I took the spikes off on Sunday. The Broomhouse has frost on the grass beside it, but the tarmac hasn't been problematic.

@chdot Leamington Walk to Argyle Place roadshambles was gritted this morning.

No! I will not be tempted. Just another 7 days until I've done my full stint!

Middle Meadow Walk had a nice evenly gritted strip down the middle of the cycle path this morning.

Due to get colder towards the end of the week, if dry. Good chance of frost and ice I'd say. Keeping the Globe Vienna 2 with spikey tyres in service probably until the end of the month, as originally planned...

High road on Arthur's Seat had one patch of ice where water had run off the hill, but other than that it was actually the hardpacked mud on the wee hillock I clambered up for breakfast that was the slippiest thing I came across.
I love mornings like that where it's clear and crisp, but even despite the dryness got to keep your wits about you!

There were still patches of frost in the lee of walls on the innocent path yesterday at three in the afternoon. It was relatively warm too, about 5-6 celsius, like today. It will apparently be half that by Friday, and -2 at night...

Ok, not quite ice but Longstone Road and the roundabout at the Calder Road are currently very greasy. I noticed it yesterday when I stopped and my foot slid away from underneath me.
Today I nearly lost my front wheel halfway around the roundabout, but caught it just in time with ninja skillz that came from my unconscious. Fortunately neither the van nor the Lothian Bus to my left had started to move off in the usual anticipative manner.

No ice this morning in the sticks.. aherm.. the Kingdom. I even cycled in on my 28mm non studded tyred bike. Its been a while but my Dawes still feels great out. Had a nice blast on the NEPN which was quite busy with cyclists.

Still ice on nearby puddle.
Presume most route surfaces generally dry.

The sub-Granton Road puddle was frozen over this morning, though not sufficiently to prevent it being cracked when ridden through.

Where is this puddle wingpig? I rode in this morning and it was mostly dry and the few frozen puddles I saw were navigable/avoidable. I rode home along the Granton road and continued along the front and onto the prom to Cramond.

The sub-Granton Road puddle is beneath Granton Road. It's both avoidable and navigable.

But it is littered with sticks and stones which, if you're not careful, may lead you to break your bones.

The tree-
thinningdestroying squad has also now proceeded as far as Five Ways, scattering easily ned-hoickble logs at the pathside behind them.Posted 11 years ago # -
I'm surprised Pete hasn't been down there retrieving fire wood.
Posted 11 years ago # -
It has however, been brought to Pete's attention.

Seems to have been below zero all night.
At least MMW was gritted again yesterday - cycle side only(?)

Is it time to take off the spikes? I thought so, but still frost on the broomhouse at 6.30am.
Wed / Thur met office say 'feels like' -4 / -5 yikes!

I bought one ice tyre and budget wheel to go with it. Ran with it for one week. There was then a thaw and I haven't put it back on. I am mostly on main roads it is true but NEPN has been well gritted since after Xmas..?

Nearly came a cropper at Meggetland this morning. Braking to a halt at the kerb to dismount and hop up onto the towpath, I realised that the edge of the road was sheet black ice.
Luckily I haven't taken my studded tyres off yet, so was able to stop under control, but only just. I was braking considerably harder than prudent for studded tyres on ice, and felt the back wheel kick out from under me just before the bike stopped.
I think that the towpath by Wester Hailes might have been gritted over the weekend. It was ice-free this morning, and there were flecks of something that could have been salt (or broken glass, of course).

Just swapped out the winter (spikey tyred) wheelset on the Globe Vienna 2 for the spring/summer (Marathon Plus tyred) wheelset. Bike's nice and zippy again, relatively speaking.
I hope there's not too much ice around the next few weeks...
