56% of people are satisfied with the maintenance of roads! Really? I know the Council do a lot of good work and don't deserve much of the criticism they get in the EEN and the like, but roads maintenance isn't exactly a strong point.

Morningsider, I just posted a comment on that very point to andrew burns - that one stat shows how flawed this is - and why was I not asked to contribute? I am sure my negativaty would have given some balance too the overall picture.

Maybe they only asked people from Barnton? Huge wide smooth sweeping roads there. The only nice road surfaces I have ever seen in the city.

I'm unsure who they surveyed because a larger than I would expect people were satisfied with their bin collection, given the collections of black bags and full wheelie bins around the place I'd say that wasn't really satisfactory.

    % satisfied with:/ Increase on 2011/2012/2011
    Delivering good vfm/ 29%+ / 60% / 31%

Now if I was a spin-doctor and one year there was 31% satisfied, but the next year there was 60%, I'd be shouting that the increase was 93% - not a measly 29%

Application form off tomorrow morning, I think - this Cooncil needs me!

Without reading the press release, I assume it means satisfaction has skyrocketed from 3 to 4%?

Some details of the methodology are available by searching for "Edinburgh People's Survey". It's not an approach I've seen in any textbook on the subject.

If I did a survey and found that a basic measure like value for money had almost doubled in a single year, without any obvious reason like a dramatic improvement in services or a dramatic decline in council tax, I'd be wondering if some source of significant bias might have influenced the results.
