  1. Got a late Christmas present in the post today, Vélo, a book written by Paul Fournel, illustrated by Jo Burt (of Mint Sauce fame), published by the folk behind Rouleur (Rapha basically). It is, naturally, beautiful.

Anyway, there was a paragraph about velodromes that I thought was somewhat interesting in relation to Edinburgh...

"Saint-Étienne was one of the rare cities to have one, but it was so dilapidated and so dangerous it was torn down. My adolescent years passed to a rhythm of the progressive forgetting of the promise to build another one. Now nobody even thinks about it."

Did I mention the book is beautiful?

Saint-Étienne also used to be a bike manufacturing town.

Don't know if any are still made there.

Between the Loire and the Rhône, Saint-Étienne, until the second half of the 20th century, was one of France’s most important industrial centres.

[You could compare it with Britain's Midlands industrial centre around Coventry, Birmingham and Wolverhampton]
