He is now planning to draw up a report listing problems large and small with existing cycling conditions, and opportunities to make things better, for discussion within the council. He would like to hear from concerned Midlothian residents, or anyone else who uses a bike in the county.

I'm massively excited about them extending the Roslin-Straiton railway line cycle path to Gilmerton at the moment. Great to see its still on the list of intentions for 2013/14. Wonder how we encourage them to move from 'with a view to possibly funding the construction of the route in 2013/14' to making it a definately funding?

I think this is fairly likely. I believe it's part of the 'family routes' strategy - though this bit will certainly be useful to some commuters.

"...them extending the Roslin-Straiton railway line cycle path to Gilmerton ..." that'll be them in City of Edinburgh Council, rather than Midlothian?

Its the existing railway line which is just about passable on a good mountain bike (I took a wrong turn one day) and is technically still Midlothian. It will pop out onto the A722 just outside Gilmerton (near the Drum farm entrance). It means you could turn right towards Dalkeith and hop onto the shared path past Dobbies or head into town through Gilmerton. Considering how unpleasant it is cycling around Straiton I'm quite looking forward to this option.

    True.

MidL did its bit years ago.

Apparently CEC will apply to the Sustrans Communities Link fund for some of the money.

Though apparently Sustrans thought it might happen last year.

    "and is technically still Midlothian"

Depends which bit you are talking about.

The CEC/MidL border is the City Bypass so the section to Gilmerton Road is CEC. If you keep going east it's back to MidL.

I don't think there are any firm plans to sort this. Doing so, to Millerhill, would open up all sorts of possibilities inc. a link to QMU.

Indeed, cooncil's fear possibly if they build a bit of path, then people use it and see ways to make it more useful and then want the cooncil to build another bit of path! It's a positive feedback loop to be resisted at all costs.
