I'd actually get the door to go upwards, as any mechanism underneath the car will get dirty and wet, and going up can avoid the need to lower the windows, and protect against the weather as it rises.

Many benefits (close parking, easier to get in & out etc)

    Any thoughts?

It would be great if the driver could get out of the passenger side so that they don't have to walk on the road at all.

Seen it before, but it will never catch on. In my experience most americans are vastly overweight so the fact that cars can be parked closer, means they'll never be able to squeeze between both cars, to get to into the vehicle.

The trapezoidal shape of doors make it tricky to upwards, and also, if the doors go upwards, there's a significant chance that if the car rolls, folk could be trapped (even if the receptacle is enclose, a ding on the top could stop retraction) - gull wing doors never caught on for this reason. And taste, too, but mainly for the trapping possibility.

Looks great - and to drive with the doors open, like a Royal Mail van - but price will keep it niche, I think.

I'm curious what would happen if you accidentally had an arm/leg in the doorway when it was operating...

Anyway maybe the solution is the Twizy - which doesn't appear to have any doors?
