Temperature has been holding quite above freezing for a few hours it seems. Has anyone been out on foot who can comment on state of pavements in town?

They're not bad around Fountain Bridge and Toll Cross.

George Square/Buccleuch place pavements all clear. i think that is thanks to Edinburgh uni's liberal application of grit.

Or the application of liberals(?)

is it only in Canada that 'grits' was a slang term for liberal party members (in the same way that Tories was slang for conservatives?)
(I guess so: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liberal_Party_of_Canada)

Does nobody know how they manage in Copenhagen?

All seems fine going west through the toon, most of the ice is gone, had a pleasantly sunny ride hame, guid times!
R :-)Posted 12 years ago # -
Most of the ice hath disappeareth round Abbeyhill way. Still large sheets of slidey glass-like stuff around in areas shaded from the sun however: footpaths, steps, gutters and around parked cars. Nowhere near as lethal as last night/this morning.

I'm thinking of cycling tomorrow. My Winterised bike is in 'da shop', what is the A90 & NEPN like? I have Conti GP4000 on the Dawes.

All the places that were a problem for me this morning are now fine.

I attempted the Broomhouse path on the way home for lunch and bailed shortly after going round the first corner. The Marathon Winters are either not knobbly enough for the snow/ice/slush mix or I've not ridden on it long enough to feel confident.
Given the roads looked quiet and were well gritted, I just popped onto them.

Just seen something like this on C4 News
http://www.gritbins.co.uk/view/product/icemaster-manual-50-tm-grit-spreader
I'm sure 'we' could produce a bike propelled version.
What ever happened to the CEC plan for giving 'citizens' snow clearing tools??

Looks like the perfect project for Dave and a Bakfeits :-)

Took the WoL path from Lanark Road to Colinton and beyond this (early) evening. It was...challenging, shall we say. Mostly hard packed slush with a few muddy bits, and lots of sliding around at 7mph. Winter tyres had a good workout on the ramp from Redhall Park up to the Lanark Road bridge.

Hmm. That last post of mine has got me thinking. To remain stable would we be able to build a Bakfeits / Bullit with two wheels at the front and a mechanism which leaned the two front wheels to maintain the downward force of the load over the center on the bike as a single wheel does? In snow and ice a skidding front wheel is undesirable but with the stability of two front wheels, with studded tyres.... able to throw salt down...
[que sounds of hamering and drilling accompanied to the A-Team theme tune, coming from Daves spare room] Are you up for a spray tan and head shave Uberuce?? :-)

Just to note for any other faint hearts that the icy roads of Marchmont/Sciennes/Grange which scared me silly a couple of nights ago are now clear and dry. The Hatton Place Glacier has melted completely, I had a clear run into work today on "quiet route 6".
PS roll on the zoutfiets!

Roads from Barnton to Cramond foreshore all nice. Foreshore itself was clear and dry (apart from the frozen 'stream' near the fallen tree - you know the one). Roads to Chancelot Mill clear. Path from Chancelot Mill to Haymarket all good. Well gritted from start to five ways, less so from there up to Haymarket but no problems.
That's because I put my spikey tyres on my mountain bike. Two years and £80 and I've still never used them.

A8 path newbridge to ed park clear for the most part this morning, excepting various sections east of airport roundabout requiring care and/or spikey tyres.
The lovely morning and queue of stationary traffic from way north of kirkliston on B800 a bonus.

I came in on the Dawes with the new Conti GP4000 slicks and was fine. A couple of icy patches (between the Barnton roads through the golf course, and on the NEPN near the deep puddle under the bridge where the path goes over the platform, but other than that, fine bright, warm morning.

NEPN lovely this morning. All clear apart from the bit that DaveC mentions.

I pulled over to let two oncoming cyclists ride slowly through the deep puddle. I then chastised the lady in front for not going 'Weeeee...' as she rolled through. Nice to get a smile back!

Headwind home - hoping it doesn't get 'haily'. Might be another MTB day tomorrow.
Posted 12 years ago # -
Free tail wind home tonight, bike was (hopefully) safely stowed in the office on Friday night, considering the bus again tomorrow though...

Looking out at a blizzard and regreting this morning's choice of a road bike with skinny slick tyres.
