I flew in to Edinburgh airport 3 hours ago. What I could see of Scotland was totally white except for Edinburgh and southern Fife which looked mostly green.

Still plenty on my ride home tonight, took the track past Clubbiedean/Torduff. A film of water on the ice, made for some interesting moments !

Snowing in Falkirk already this morning, though too cold for the big fluffy flakes so far.. A strong and cold SE wind as well, strong enough to see me doing 40mph instead of 30 down the hill to the station!
I'll be watching the forecast/train notices carefully today in case there is a need for an early finish :-)

Edited to add, by contrast Edinburgh Park is clear, calm and dry. Even feels relatively warm! (Or at least not as bitingly cold :-))

Driving to near Wigan tonight, alas.

More than a little concerned that we'll get our dose of winter disruption after all, since we've dodged 99.9% of the snow in Edinburgh proper!

Dave , if you stayed in Balerno and had children who were travel sick you would go to Wigan by M8, M74, M6. This route might still not avoid the snow? But it would stop your children being travel sick (if you lived in Balerno and had children who were travel sick)

I'm mostly worried about the middle stretch of the M6 with 10-20cm of snow, but duly noted! :)

Damn, hadn't thought about travel sickness.

I work out at the Bush Estate. All the car drivers are heading home from work now for fear of getting stuck. I'm on foot and see no reason to leave. Foot power wins again!!

You say wins but you're the one stuck in the office :D. I hate when the fifers and Lothian lot leave on mass and I'm stuck here because I can't in good conscience say I'd have any trouble getting home.

Well it has literally been snowing all day in Dundeh. No wind though, so hopefully no drifts to block the railway lines further south....

It was fun cycling in the snow and slush this morning. Schwalbe Snow Stud tyres rule!

@steveo, as a side benefit (?) properly equipped cyclists can now be doubly smug in comparison with their car borne colleagues and their sorry excuses.

Steveo - valid point. Still come Monday morning I'll have less work to do than the early leavers (actually thats a complete lie but I get the joy of jumping in and out of snow drifts on my way home so I definately win again).

Hah - I cycled in at lunchtime today with swirling snow in Dalkeith, wetter in town. Now it looks okay. However my snow tyres meant for another bike have arrived at work. So that means that it will snow heavily for going home time then (once I get the tyres on) it will be mild the rest of the winter.

Just received the following info: "M90 north is just snow. Outside lane passable in 4x4 with proper tyres only. Shed loads of snow up here."
Hope the Fifers are prepared :-)

I walked home from Haymarket to Marchmont. At first it was raining, and then I noticed I was sliding on the pavement, as the rain was beginning to freeze into slush underfoot. Then it began to sleet and now seems to be snowing. A lot of slidy slush underfoot and on untreated road surfaces.

    Be careful!

The teeny ride from Morningside to Polworth Scotmid to home was one of the grimmer ones.

Slush all over the place; one SPD jammed open with packed snow; the realisation that tilting my foot upside down to check the cleat means my otherwise godlike Gore overshoes just pour water into my toes; drivers being considerate but possessed of a sudden mania for 3-point turns they couldn't achieve; driver behind me being politely impatient as I rolled down steepish Gillsland Road - keeping a good distance, but plainly unaware that even if the brakes in his wheels were four clones of the Hulk, the traction between a tyre and an ungritted sidestreet like that is Thai massage weasel tiny; trying to choose a fine wine for tonight's dinner with Scotmid's paltry selection; meeting recombodna there and having a wee blether.

Well, okay, the last two weren't bad, but the weather was chuff.

Interesting ride home. Headed down the c-c-c-c-cobbles on Scotland St and onto the path down to the shore. The slight snow had turned to rain and never stopped all the way along to Granton and beyond to the prom and Cramond. Up to Cramond Brig still rain and down through the Dalmeny estate the muddy track beyond cardiac hill (Strava). The track is closed but we pushed on and although a bit muddy it was fine. Past the house and on along the coast to S Queensferry where the cobbles were very slippry again. From there up and over the FRB it continued raining until I saw slush at Hillend. Still just rain here in the Bay and not settling.

@Kappers. We once set off for a wedding function at the Zoo from our flat on Easter Rd. At the foot it was raining. By London rd it was snowing. West End it was settling deeper. By Corstophen it was very deep and we struggled up the hill to the Hotel carpark. We ended up staying in the hotel afterwards as we could not get home.

Some falling snow on my way home from Glasgow to Airdrie around 1500 - 1700 hrs. Almost none of it is lying.

Council expect some heavy stuff later, Met Office don't agree.

    @uberuce.

Roads - Always avoid gillsland. Pretty much anything is better

Scotmid wines - they do an extreme nice faustino vii Rioja, which I cannot recommend highly enough. (not fair trade though).

Oh, I ride Gillsland precisely because it's a scumbag. My route home is, after all, immediately after having looked after a dozen dozen children, so I need something energetic to unwind on. Same reason I ride up Morningside Road even though Balcarres Street is the same distance but flat.

First part of the run home was fine, as others has observed, Marathon winters are excellent. Once in Falkirk I had to meet Mrs Smudge and Smudge minor, bike strapped onto the back of the car we attempted to head the ten minutes home.
Nightmare, it took over two hours and the drivers who don't had polished road surfaces to a lethal degree. I had at a couple of points to use some very unorthodox techniques just to put the car where I wanted it and not where gravity/momentum wanted. Very unpleasant.
    Safe home now though :-)

Hope that convinces mrs smudge that she would be better of on a bike too?
