Three contractors vans parked on the path this morning, at the compound at Bankhead Drive, in such a thoughtful manner as to almost completely block it (two parked on path itself one behind eachother, the third was parked half-in and half-out of the compound, end-on to the other two. Left about a foot or so of space to get through.)

For what it's worth I took a picture and emailed it in protest to the tram address at the council. I got (two) an out of office reply saying they'll get back to me in 10 days.

Further round the corner, at the junction with South Gyle Access, they were digging up the old pavement and the security fence had been pushed towards the red and white bollard fence to leave a navigable "detour" of about a foot width.

    @k

It gets worse when you proceed further (toward Ed Park Station past Makro), the detour takes you on to the road via a pedestrian crossing as the path is covered with fences / power units etc.

    marvelous

@Nelly you weren't kidding. I went that way this morning "for a laugh". I shouldn't have bothered...

4 vehicles parked on the path this morning, but on a more positive note got an email from someone at Council HQ saying it wasn't the first complaint they had recieved and it would be raised at a meeting with contractors (again) today.

On the plus side they've planted some trees at the Junction with Carrick Knowe.

@kaputnik - Whether or not you can ride across a level crossing (on a railway line) depends on the status of the right of way you are using.

Had to rather strongly deal with the menacing letters from SWT Enforcement department - 5 enforcement staff ganging up on 3 pensioners and also on a young family detaining both for 30 min or so at Wareham LC, with claim that Cyclists Dismount (neither correctly to Diagram 966) meant No Cycling (Diagram 951) when they cycled (on signposted cycle route) across level crossing (formerly a road but reduced when by pass and bridge built - with long detour to use it and no footways! This crossing was licensed between British Rail and Dorset CC for pedestrian AND cycle traffic, so SWT and BTP were well out of order, but still tried to take cases to court.

Generally the railway position is a footpath crossing is solely for crossing on foot, a bridleway is for horses, cycles, and on foot, and a public road is for all traffic. There are some crossings which are User Worked (UWC) where those who have established rights to gain access to land they own with a vehicle can open gates and cross the line.

Since the path approaching from both sides is a shared use cycle route it clearly should be a shared use cycle route across the tram tracks (which have generally come along AFTER the cycle route and severed it).

The ORR/Network Rail All Level Crossings Risk Management algorithm is probably not appropriate for trams being driven on line of sight rather than controlled by signalling. Although a lot of the principles of direct visibility between crossing users and tram drivers from the decision points apply (on either side of the crossing) and clarity of the limits of the 'place of safety' may need to be sorted out.

For the last detail I wonder if anyone has prepared signage and path markings, to deliver along the lines of "STOP at White Line When Trams Approaching" or "STOP at White Line when lights are flashing" That said the right-side failure mode should perhaps be to cross when lights are flashing and stop if they fail to flash or are not lit.

The other detail (which might survive on some sites) should be angled mirrors set up on each corner so that a pedestrian or cyclist looking straight ahead also sees a view up & down the track, should they be stupid enough not to turn their head to look. Any chicane ideas fall down through being space consuming, awkward to use (so people ride around them) and only unidirectionally effective.

oh good. It's got to the poitn of being almost unbearable. I noticed that the crossing point at South Gyle Access has been moved in a sensible driection by about 10m, significantly reducing the amount of doglegging required (although, it's still not a straight-on junction). 7/10. An improvement, could be better.

I had to cycle to Decathlon on Tuesday 12th Jan 2013 to exchange some goods. I approached from the north and as I go to Edin Park station, on the north side, went left and had to hop up onto the path and carry my bike down the steps. Then on the other side dodge fencing to where cycles have plainly cut across the grass to access the road. From Decathlon >> east I took the road as far as the garages (Belmont etc) where I was able to remount the cycle path but it was blocked at a few places and I just cut back onto the road. The crossing at Broomhouse Rd could have been made more like Saughton Road North to cut out the ridiculous dog leg! Better still just route up and over the bridges and follow the tram route? At Saughton Road North I was blessed when the lights turned green as I approached them to cross :D From there I maintained my route on the cycle path until near the right hand corner opp Saughton Main St where I had to get back on the road as the path was narrowing and full of wrinklies queuing for the bus. From there I cut down Stenhouse Ave N and onto Whitson Road. At the end (Balgreen) I took no chances with a potential blockage ahead and went left, under the bridge and right, onto Baird Drive where I picked up the WoL path Then on to Russell Road and Haymarket Yards... The west end is a PITA so I followed the diversion and went past the Cathedral and eventually onto George St. Its a straight line in but there are a few nasty parts where you have to get back on the road, and in parts its quicker by road!

I tweeted them last week. No reply. It is 'almost' there, and will be an improvement, but it is slightly marred by all the vans and lack of the final tarmac surface......

Amazingly, just when you thought it was nearly all over, Scottish Power have come along and dug a huge chunk out the path at the tram (surprise surprise) substation just before South Gyle Access. You think they could have done it any point in the last year or so...

Was blocked this morning by a flatbed lorry driven onto the path while the occupants stood around pointing at something inside the substation compound. There are 2 now empty vehicle compounds there they could have used.

I see they are to do repairs. A lot of the (incorrect) recently installed rumble strips are now cracked up from contractors vehicles being parked / driven over them. I also suspect they were very badly laid, with improper foundations, judging by how they have settled with use.

I'd welcome some bollards on this path to keep these chumps and their vehicles off.

I can't remember who tweeted a photo of a dustbin lorry parked on expensive paving flags. There's a reason roads are made stronger than pavements and paths.

As I passed this evening, "cyclists dismount, end of cycle path" signs were being installed at the Stenhouse end. I noted that it was "cyclists" as opposed to that mysterious lone rider previously referred to...

The new crossing island / chicane is almost complete. It is VERY narrow and very fenced in. It's going to be a right-old bottleneck.

Annnnd, yet another set being put in this lunchtime. This one shortly before the rampsy bit at the Stenhouse end. From the look of the pile of slabs, this one will be cyclist/cyclist too.

RE your final photo42, chdot, the split-personality Lochside Avenue. I sometimes use this (instead of the underpass) to come out of Edinburgh Park, but in recent months the shared-use path is frequently blocked at the Novotel entrance with Krispy Kreme "I'll just be a minute" parked cars. Unfortunately I don't see this changing once the tramworks are complete.

The overpass roadway there is not an attractive option because once cars get through the keycarded barriers on the north side of the overpass, they seem to see the overpass as their own personal drag strip.

There's a grave lack of signage round those parts too. Edinburgh Park is all 20mph (hahahaha) and so is the overpass, until you get round and down to the Hermiston Gate feeder roundabout. Unfortunately the cars on the overpass frequently hit about 50 or 60 as they roar over it. What is it with BMWs and the irresistable sight of 200 metres of clear road before the next roundabout?

They've had some problems with the 'keycarded barriers', where cars/vans have been damaging them by tailgaiting or just crashing into them...5 incidents in the past month (@£11,000) have forced them into putting significant speedbumps in front of the barriers in the past week. Also the Park have made a plea to drivers to stick to 20mph.

Back on Broomhouse Path topic.. Given the new infrastructure at here, how about we push for bridges over South Gyle Access and Broomhouse Road too!
