Her lawyer successfully argued for a shorter punishment, saying McAlpine needed her car to travel to work from her home in Glasgow.
"need". Perhaps Keith Broon could arrange an electric limo to pick her up from Waverley so she can avoid what must be a very pleasant 10-15 minute walk to Holyrood.
He told McAlpine: “If someone has nine points, they need to be very careful. These cameras are well signposted on the roads.”
I think one has to be careful to observe the speed limit regardless of how many points are on the licence. Speed limits aren't something that are to be obeyed only by those at risk of losing their licence.
“Joan McAlpine accepted full responsibility – quite a contrast with Chris Huhne,” he said.
“For the two-month period, Joan will take the bus and train more, and in any event is often accompanied to constituency visits by a member of staff who drives.”[i]
Perhaps she'll learn a few things through user experience. On the other hand she might just find she likes being chauffeured everywhere.
I've tweeted her about using a bike in the past when she has talked about her mini.
I don't think the Hootsmon thought abut this one,
She wrote to transport minister Keith Brown asking if a 20mph limit could be piloted in Langholm – a first for Scottish trunk roads which have minimum limits of 30mph.
Because it doesn't quite work, does it? "No maximum limits below 30 mph" I think they mean.
Even Patrick Harvie doesn't appear to use a bike but I found taxies listed in his expenses. I never really understand why Greens are ok with taxies, certainly not in town. Having not been in one in more than 20 years, and never used one on my own, I may be biased.
If you don't 'run' a car, then I don't see what is wrong with occasional taxis. We use them when elderly relatives visit, when we need to get to the hospital (and bike not feasible), the airport, and other emergencies. That's about it, but I'm glad they're there then.
Would you use one from Waverly to Holyrood? MSPs seem to think that's ok.
All my elderly relatives still drive but I have offed to drive my parents on holiday in the summer. My dad finds long motorway driving a bit tiring these days and my mum likes the way I can do it without encountering the same quota of bandits who seem to populate the road when my dad is at the wheel. The last time I drove them to Gloucester and back she went to sleep which doesn't happen if it's not me. I made the mistake of playing a Stephen Fry audio book which caused my dad to enquire if Mr Fry was in fact gay.
"Would you use one from Waverly to Holyrood"
Not daily.
"All my elderly relatives still drive"
My elderly relatives drive too, but we don't. so when they visit (by public transport/air), we takes buses or taxis.
My mum flies abroad with her chums.
I was on a plane in '86, compulsory university trip. My dad was on one in '65.
From what I read it does seem a hellish way to travel.
hmm. She's 'our' MSP. I might reiterate our offer of a bike loan.
In fairness, getting around Dumfries and Galloway without a car is a bit complicated. Even with a bike, it's a looong way to Stranraer and the trains go via Ayr
wfb - further to the mistakes already pointed out: "20mph limit ... a first for Scottish trunk roads" - several trunk roads already have (or have had) 20mph limits, albeit part-time near schools (and maybe temporary for roadworks?)
"minimum limits" I don't know of any in Scotland - the only one I can remember seeing is the Dartford tunnel in London (white number 10 on blue circle).
I thought the Clyde Tunnel had a minimum limit but I don't see it on Google Earth. All I can see there now is the max 30 and no explosives signs.
