    Interesting comment. Cars as anti-mugging devices? Is the Royal Mile that busy with traffic in the wee small hours?

    Well this is one of the interesting 'impressions'.

    'Cars have witnesses/people who might stop and help.'

    'All pedestrians are potential muggers', or 'no cars means fewer pedestrians'

    There must be some research somewhere(?)

    As long as the restrictions are on motorised vehicles they are to be welcomed. Making the street cycle friendly though is likely to involve some action on the setts.

    Amazing comments on the chipwrapper site though. Apparently tourists spend more money while on coaches than they might do while walking past shops on a nice street. A simple suggestion might be to make the esplanade the only place you can drop off a tour party, and Holyrood the only place a coach can pick up (or maybe Caltongate). Are there really that many people who couldnt walk a mile downhill? (or get a rickshaw)

    there is an alarming spot that looks like a buffalo wallow* on the mile between Johnstone terrace and the Mound.

    @SRD Good point - the Lawnmarket to the Castle section is in shocking nick. I was thinking more of the surface from Holyrood to the Tron.

    The right turn from St Mary's Street into the Canongate features some fairly ropey wobble-stones and a diagonal cliff unless you go wide, overshoot then make a right-angled turn. The Canongate itself is tarmac, so is mostly OK apart from drains and access holes. Between St Mary's Street and North Bridge the setts are fairly firmly wedged but very very juddery even at uphill speeds, making it tempting to go in the smooth gutter if there's nothing behind which would get the wrong impression.

    Hilarious. Another example of the normally-absent social conscience that appears in The Motorists whenever the right to drive is threatened.

    All streets must be dedicated to cars at all times. We must resist the threat of pedestrianisation, and any excuse, however feeble, will do.

    Hmm, in some ways I think it's more complex than that, @CalumCookable. People withdraw into cars out of fear of strangers, and being in a car isolates you from strangers, allowing your fears to grow. It's why I hate gated communities and private schools, and love public transport. I LIKE mixing with others. People are generally decent. But cars put you into conflict with others, and the main interaction with strangers is fighting - almost literally - for space on the road.

    @bdellar. I would add only that for lots of people mixing is hard work. I don't think it ought to be, necessarily, but it can be. And lots of people don't have the patience to see the benefits that can be returned. So it is easier to strap their kids into childseats, than to negotiate bus travel where your kids may misbehave or ask awkward questions, not seeing that those kids benefit from seeing different people and learning how to talk politely to strangers, even strange ones. And generationally, this must perpetuate itself. If you've never had to engage with people with different senses of personal space, and different ideas of how you should interact as a child, then you are likely to find it threatening and challenging when you are an adult with your own kids.

    A BLANKET ban on cars using key stretches of the Royal Mile is set to be introduced after Christmas in a move to boost the fortunes of Edinburgh’s most iconic thoroughfare.

    Building on the success of the semi-pedestrianised section near City Chambers, planning chiefs are set to introduce traffic calming measures outside Canongate Kirk and create a no-car zone between Niddry Street and St Mary’s Street, though access would be allowed between 6.30 and 10.30am

    Of course, it's not a blanket ban as the headline would suggest, as there are hours of exemption!

    Fail!
