"However, we know that male drivers make up three-quarters of those killed on our roads and 70% of fatal accidents happen on country roads.

  2. Interesting stats.

One in every 421 people living in Scotland was injured on the road in 2011.
One in every 28,467 was killed.

As a comparators one in 20,549,418 people in the world have died of bird flu.

Keith Broonie takes an odd line at launching this as well, basically saying, "Aye, we cud dae a wee bit better like, but wur no bad akshually, in fact they road are the safest thu've evar been!"

Oh my but that "ghost car" looks familiar. Going round corners on two wheels and on the wrong side of the road, skidding on stuff. That really is how people drive on country roads.

  6. I'm hoping that's in the video that I can't watch (or as Keith Brown would put it, "Ah cannae watch eh") otherwise I'm worried that you're seeing things Min...

I can see why they're looking at rural roads, but it would be nice if there was some sort of a campaign around driving safely in urban areas as well.

I think the Minister might want to invest in a new calculator. He states:

"However, we know that male drivers make up three-quarters of those killed on our roads and 70% of fatal accidents happen on country roads."

However, out of the 186 fatalities on Scotland's roads in 2011 some 89 were in a car (can't find stats for driver/passnger breakdown or gender of those involved) - which I make to be about 48%.

Obviously, all fatalities on the road are equally terrible. However, this matters as scarce resources will be directed where Ministers see the problem being.

    Stats at:

Yes. The video shows Coulthard driving along a road while a "ghost" car detaches itself from his and drives like a prat until it ends up on its roof in a field. I don't know what he is saying though as I can't hear it!

"invest in a new calculator" - or re-arrange the words to 'males make up three-quarters of those drivers killed on our roads' (49 males out of 65 car drivers. 24 car users killed were passengers)

    "or re-arrange the words"

    That makes sense.

Have you found more detailed stats?

There are details on all reported road accidents with vehicle and casualty data at http://data.gov.uk/dataset/road-accidents-safety-data that can be loaded year by year into excel, use police force codes to pick out Scotland, use severity to pick out fatals, class to pick out driver/rider, passenger, pedestrian, and match casualty/vehicle codes to find out vehicle types (or you could ask a friendly road safety engineer with access to a database)

saw this advert on the telly and found it to be refreshingly incisive and cleverly presented

ideally this should be the first of a lengthy series of adverts -- there's no shortage of scenarios that could be showcased in this style

on heavy rotation during every ad break nightly for the next ten years

just watch the tac (I think !) autralian safety stuff, it should be on every day and night !Safety campaigns are very difficult to get right for everyone all the time, young males are "traditionally" the targets and getting them to actually respect the people and images is difficult. The use of DC, is poss too late, he is no longer winning F1, but the ghost car thing is used in ps3 games etc so the yoof might get it, BUT, the ghost car is the one that crashes, with very little nasty evidence of real injury.
My son recently attended a drive alive show by scottish police et all, for the second or third time, he says it still scares the bejesus out of him.
When we were younger, the country roads outside slamanan and sheildhill(smudge!) were known as "hazard county " or just plain the wrecking yard !
    be safe !
Oh and does my ankle injury while exiting my vehicle mean I am a statistic too ?

I agree with splitshift, ghost cars simply give the illusion it's all just a computer game.

Basically, the adverts are not graphic enough. There is one 'ad' doing the rounds on Facebook that is very graphic however, probably too graphic for TV. It involves texting while driving.

To make matters worse, many of the 'cheap cop TV' programmes only show crashes where no one dies. So, the person watching comes away with the impression that most crashes are survivable, even when the reality is that in almost identical circumstances someone could have died.
