IN ITS heyday it radiated like the Royal Botanics and blossomed with Scotland’s best-loved rose garden. Half-a-century later and Saughton Park might have lost a little of its sheen, but a £4 million funding bid may now sow the seeds of a revival that would transform it into the Capital’s flagship gardens.

I like the sound of this, especially the mention of a tea room. Will be nicely placed for refreshments on sorties along the WoL.

There is a tea room there already but it is not rennie macintosh, it is plastic cups and supported employment

    EDIT: closed for winter?

The glasshouse with pond and statue of Gandhi worth a visit too

Saughton Park on route to transformation

A £5.8m project to transform Saughton Park and Gardens into one of Edinburgh’s premier parks has taken a major step forward with the confirmation of initial funding support from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF). The project has passed the first round stage which indicates backing for the outline proposals. Development funding of £392,000 has been awarded to help the City of Edinburgh Council progress their plans to apply for a full grant at a later date. The Council plans to secure funding to restore the historic park to its former glory, which in its hey-day rivalled the Royal Botanic Gardens and played host to one of the best collection of roses in Scotland. Councillor Lesley Hinds, the city’s Transport and Environment Convener, said: “This is a fantastic indication of support from the Heritage Lottery Fund and we now have two years to fully develop our plans. This project has the potential to completely transform this area of the city and put Saughton Park on a level with other premier Edinburgh parks” The proposals include working in partnership with the Royal Caledonian Horticultural Society, who would be based at Saughton Gardens.

£5.8M sounds an awful lot for some roses and a tea room.

But they wouldn't last as long, or give as much pleasure.

    Definitely more controversial too!

The thing is I've visited said garden a couple of times in recent weeks and apart from a nice tea room its absolutely wonderful as it is. I struggle to see how they can justify this level of expense. I hope they don't ruin it.

If I remember right part of the plan is to repair the derelict toilets and out buildings that currently have football goals dumped in them as visitors to the gardens and especially the play/skate park have no facilities currently.

NB The main building, the one with the glasshouse, has toilets.

I hope I'm not going paranoid. I suppressed my "how lovely" autoresponse, and read this as a piece of propaganda to cover up the awarding of contracts to local government favourites at heavily inflated prices. I guess the communal repairs boys have to get their money somehow.

Seriously, £5.8 million to renovate some gardens, even including a tearoom and toilets?
