We had equally ugly watches like that when I was a yoof which had tiny calculators on them.

...And so the problem remained; lots of the people were mean, and most of them were miserable, even the ones with digital watches.

I still think digital watches are a pretty neat idea. Kind of hankering after a Casio PAW1200.

Though the Cathode Corner Nixie Watch is pretty hard to beat for total geekery.

@Arrelcat now that's a watch! Perfect for the 1969 Apollo moon landing retrochic

PAW1200 "Each day the watch receives a radio signal from the atomic transmitter in Fort Collins, Colorado. That signal resets the watch to the split second. It also automatically adjusts to Daylight Savings Time and Leap Year changes."

Aw great, so I change it to GMT and the bally yanks change it to MST each day.... ;o)

@Arellcat - I too am a big Casio fan - I have one of the smaller Protrek (PRG 100 tough solar) which looks ok on my (rather skinny for a bloke) wrist.

That one doesnt feature the digital compass, but at least doesnt look like a saucer on my wrist. Has a pretty accurate thermometer which allows you to compensate for body temperature fooling the sensor.

Altimeter is bang on as well, having tested it in the Alps.

That reminds me, must renew the batteries on the outside part of the weather station.

@Nelly, and that reminds me that I need to renew the battery in my Baby-G. And I was in Maplin yesterday too! It refuses to wear out or become damaged, but it's a million miles away from its original sparkly clean appearance. Maybe I should stealth it.

I have a Casio PRT-40, but unfortunately it died.

Any tips for bringing them back to life?

My £25-from-ALDI replacement has all the same features, but the internal-button-prongs* didn't survive the last bettery change very well.

    (*is that an actual thing?)

@cb - I suggest getting the back off it sharpish to ensure the battery isnt leaking !

As regards the ALDI one, whats it like underwater???

I got a LIDL ABC watch a few years ago - the ABC functionality worked really well, but sadly the sensor was a hole in the back - which meant it died as soon as exposed to water.....

Not the best advert for an active watch !!

I did replace the batteries (three of them!) as I thought that was the problem, but still no signs of life.

Re, the ALDI one; first of all, just checked at it was actually from LIDL! Small LIDL logo on the box, but other than that, no branding. Nothing about being usable underwater - doesn't even say it's showerproof!

Tesco were doing something similar for a while for something crazy like £15 or £20, but can't see anything like it at the moment on their website.

@lionfish :) This lifeform is amazingly primitive that it still thinks digital watches are a pretty neat idea.

I have a Pebble. But no iPhone or Android phone, so I have paired it with my iPad for the watchface choice, and just enjoy the e-ink watch. One day maybe they will make it work with Windows phones, but actually I doubt I'll need it unless I know there's a call coming that I can't afford to miss.

I'll never be checking emails or texts while driving :)

Wristwatches? Pah. They're, like, soooooo 20th century.

Sony Smartwatch. Came bundled free with an Xperia phone. I didn't think I'd like the watch that much, but it's actually quite addictive - feel it vibrate, check who's calling before you bother pulling the phone out of your pocket, etc.
Downside - yet another blooming thing that needs to be charged every few days.

I stopped wearing a watch years ago, when I started carrying a mobile phone around instead. People reach for their pocket-watches/mobiles again to check the time.

@Arelicat - love the watch! Maybe I'll build something equally ridiculous, but it will just be a boring-normal LED 7-seg display for me.

@Nelly: weather station? On the electronics front I'm thinking of building one for my Dad's birthday. [geeky details: pic chip driven - but I need to think about how to build all the sensors - especially the wind speed and precipitation sensors, any advice?]
