Some of the comments you get on YouTube are very odd. And quite a few seem to think that when you commute by bike you complain about poor driving because you're 'jealous' of those driving. Well. I get to work faster; have a wonderfully toned arse, thighs and calves (no, you can't touch, behave); get ill infrequently; don't have to listen to breakfast radio.... And. Erm. I've got a car thanks. A rather fast and utterly fun little(ish) car. All in all I'm not actually entirely sure what I'm supposed to be jealous of...

Jealousy?

Mr WC
Are the youtube people the same as the EEN commenters? Or an even more idiotic / alleged wind up merchant demographic?

I agree, WC. I cycle around Edinburgh because it keeps my cardio fitness high and lung capacity clear(ish), is more convenient than always struggling to find a parking space and is par for the course with a bus or car on journey times in daytime traffic. It can also be enjoyable (*gasp*) despite the unnecessary close calls and the generally poor standard of driving to anticipate.
One of the best YouTube jokes I've ever heard (courtesy of a comedian on Live at the Apollo, though I forget their name) involved posting the simple sentence "it's fake" in the comments of a YouTube clip. Then sitting back to enjoy the inevitable onslaught of virtual arguments and insults.

Compared to the YouTube comments, the EEN is like one of those planets on Star Trek where everyone hangs around wearing white robes and discussing philosophy while smiling.

Nah, it'll be scraping away at frozen windscreens in the morning that you're really jealous of.
Possibly followed by a few minutes sat shivering in a freezing car, followed by the rest of the journey with contact lenses binding slowly to your eyes as a result of the dry heat from the blowers.

Yeah, YouTube is the true bastion of insane, unfettered comments. I don't post so many videos that I get death threats like Mr Magnatom, but occasionally someone pops up in the stream telling you you're a sad little man or you're jealous or that because you're a cyclist you're asking for it.
This one guy had commented on a video I had getting cut up by a BMW, the driver of which then accelerated away only to be caught by traffic, then when it cleared accelerated (up to about 50 in a 30 near a school) only to get held up by a bus. The commenter reckoned 'cyclists will complain about anything' and that this was big man in a car v. small man on a silly bike, and that I was jealous. I simply replied that I'm 6'3" and have a much nicer car than a BMW 320d.
But the jealousy one is something I've heard in a number of places, and I just don't get it. Or maybe I do, again it probably falls into the 'driving is normal and aspirational' mindset, so everyone must want to drive. I actually think it's the fact that I do have a car that trumps that jealousy point completely - but from a personal point of view it's that fitness and speed and not being locked in a box that does it.

Maybe you need a sign on your back that says, "I have a nice car by the by the way; I'm enjoying this you know".
Or snappier.

The commenter reckoned 'cyclists will complain about anything'
well if he reads this forum , he`s got that part right

'cyclists will complain about anything'
Yeah it's because 'we' are an oppressed minority - like motorists...

"well if he reads this forum , he`s got that part right "
Are you complaining about people complaining? ;)

I haven't tried it, but vimeo.com might be a better alternative to YouTube

Crucial thing to note is that certain topics' online comments may be dominated by teenage boys.

Indeed.
On Vimeo, I don't think it's as straightforward to join as YouTube. I think you've got to be an organisation or some such or a filmmaker - certainly I looked into it in the past for citycycling and couldn't match their criteria.

"I think you've got to be an organisation or some such"
I was an 'early adopter' and don't remember any such restrictions.
Joined because was much higher res than YouTube.
Then YouTube got better with easy iPhone upload too.

"My other bike's a bike.
And so is my other bike.
Because I like it that way"Frankly, for the combined value of my 4 bikes I could have bought a pretty reasonable used runabout car, but why would I want to? The bikes are a fraction of the cost to maintain too, cost nothing in tax, keep me fitter... the list goes on.
Jealousy, yeah, right!
