Cycling to East Fifeshire

I'm cycling over to a friend in Lundin Links on Saturday.

I was thinking out to Inverkeithing, follow NCN signed route, but instead of turning up the hill to the back of Dunfermline, carrying straight on the main road to Crossgates. I think the "Nippie Sweetie" Audax went that way and seemed fine. At Crossgates was going to turn right and head along B925 for Auchtertool as far as Kirkcaldy. I then thought I'd give the coastal path along the esplanade a shot, for a bit of a laugh.

I was going to avoid the direct route of A915 and A955 east from Kirkcaldy. I assume the coastal path is un-navigable by road bike east of Kirkcaldy through the Wemysses?

Instead I was going to head north out of Kirkcaldy on the B9130 which is marked on OSM as Route 766 - and turn off briefly at Thornton to photograph some old colliery porn at Rothes. From thereforeward back roads through Coaltown and then Milton of Balgonie. There's no way to approach Leven from the East by the looks of it and avoid an A-road, so I would take the short downhill section of A911 to Windygates and then stay on the Windygates Road all the way to Leven.

Looks like I might be able to go along coast from Level to Lundin Links on Coastal Path as it cuts through the golf course, so might give that a shot.

Anyone suggest any alternatives? I'll be carrying a decent amount of stuff (full change of clothes and shoes, overnight stuff, presents etc.,) so no intension of going along route 1 over Cleish Hill.

Personally, I'd get the train to Markinch and tootle along from there. But I'm lazy.

sand makes it slow going along that stretch, but you can always get off and walk, what with it being right at the end of your journey

    "B9130"

Which is what CS suggests -

Various bits of Coastal Path 'challenging'. The sand at LL is tedious, and there are flights of steps.

    Dysart worth a detour.

Looks like a good route you've come up with already.

Can't add much, other than that the FCP between the Wemysses is ok but would probably be slow going and might even need the odd push.

The A915 between Leven and Lundin Links has a shared use pavement which looks ok in the grand scheme of things:

I remember being hooted at an punishment passed for not noticing that that pavement was in fact a shared use path... that was on a Saturday when there was quite a lot of traffic about (and only one idiot had a problem with us, of course). I would go that way again, and I would still cycle on the road.

Road surface does look better than the path

My last couple of thoughts from last year might be helpful.

Uberuce and I cycled some of that route round fife.

In Kirckaldy at the end of the prom I'd take this route:

It avoids the busy roundabout (not a flyover) on the A92!!

At Leven we tried going along the coast but decided to cut back up to the A915. Its quiet along there as most traffic runs north and its basically near your destination.

If you want to pop in on the way home for a brew and a cake, let me know ahead of time and I'll give you directions, do you have a GPS? You have my mobile right?

@DaveC thanks for that, will have a gander. I'm as yet undecided about when and how I'm coming home (BH Monday so may extend my welcome) but will let you know if I'm in the vicinity. I'm tempted to head east out of Lundin Links around the coast to my old stomping ground of St Andrews on the Sunday and train it home from there.

That route I gave avoids the busy roundabout and takes in a foot bridge over the A92. Don't be put off approaching it as it is a dead end to cars, but is a nice quiet route. The bridge is like the one at Newcraighall unfortunately, with silly shallow sloped steps up and down, but preferable to the rundabout.
