Christchurch's push to become a premier cycling city is gaining momentum with ambitious plans for separating cyclists and motorists on busy routes.

Excellent. Christchurch already has high cycle use, due to the fact it's flat, fairly dry and has a large student population.

And although the recent earthquakes have brought devastation*, the positive side is that there's a clean slate to build cool stuff from the ground up.

    * Many of the multistorey office blocks in the central district will be demolished, even though they survived the earthquake, as they are no longer safe. (The buildings were only designed to remain standing after a major earthquake, but not necessarily be useable afterward!)

See here for more info on the quakes:

    Some pics:

    Cracked spire
The spire you see here should be sittling on top of the column centre left!

    Westpac building now unsafe
Look closely at the tall Westpac building centre right. The horizontal concrete beams all have cracks on the right hand side where they connect to the vertical tubular pillar

    Christchurch cathedral
The black triangle (centre right) is what's left of Christchurch cathedral. There once was a spire here too
