My cousin's g'daughter has CP. The wee one is 4 and a bit now and was anxious to be like her siblings and be mobile instead of being pushed in her special buggy. The grandparents have bought her a SupaTrike as it's very sturdy, has room for growth and is chain driven rather than pedals on the front wheel. However, they are aware that with the CP she might need a wee help and pushing a trike is not good for the back.

Does anyone know of anywhere that sells clamp on handles for trikes? I've found a 'Push Me Home' on the internet but it would cost £20 to get the £22 product sent over.

    Anyone suggest any reliable bodges?

Thanking you all in anticipation of your brilliant ideas. (I know you'll have some)

I passed this one on to someone from the Inclusive Cycling Forum and he suggested contacting Quest88 http://www.allabilitycycling.com

"Advice is to give Quest88 a ring and explain the situation, I'd be surprised if they don't have a solution themselves but they'll know where to find one I think. They're very good, experienced with kids (they also make children's orthotics) and helpful."

If you are in Edinburgh you could call round to The Yard and ask their advice. They have loads of adapted trikes and will have the supplier catalogues. They're very helpful.

Thank you for your prompt responses and great suggestions. I'll pass them on. Wee toot is just thrilled to bits with her new transport but the legs aren't up to anything other than round the garden cycling just yet, so a wee bit help is required.

    Thanks again..

you might also find that a psuh stick concept for another trike could be bolted on? eg the one discussed in this old thread

I was also thinking about the seat-post attach for the waitrose trailer that was posted about yesterday. Would need some metal working though probably.

Thanks, SRD. I remembered the bodge enquiry and my suggestion for meccano and zip ties but couldn't think if the trike concerned already had a 'receiver' for a handle (and I couldn't find the thread).

Now away out to garage with old walking stick and assorted 'bits' to see if I can figure something out whilst the grandparents are trying the other suggestions.

Thanks again. Now I'm wondering if meccano and zip ties would work to get our Scenery Watcher on a tandem? Mmmmm

I'm trying to remember where I read it, but there was a wee girl with CP who was given a trike and ended up racing on a completely normal bike. Depends on the degree of severity of course.

I would avoid thinking of a trike as an abnormal bike. It's a completely different machine which just happens to look a lot like a bike. The technique required is quite distinct.

sorry - poorly worded. I meant that she was racing on an unadapted bike alongside her non-CP peers, and very successfully too.

They're hoping that the use of the trike will enhance the physio she gets following her Botox injections, aswell as allowing her to muck in with her siblings fun. She's done well so far and can walk, albeit slowly, with her wee zimmer. With any luck the trike will build up her leg muscles and help the walking too.

    Thanks for the help, chaps/chapesses.

    sallyhinch,

I wasn't meaning to snarky about it, just mentioning that bikes and trikes are very different things.

Know this request was just for simple arm to clamp onto something for not too much cash! Seems to have gone further...

Velo Vision have a very complete list of 'all-abiliities' cycling.

Velo Vision All-Abilities Cycling Guide and comments

Now many of these are for adults but worth having an idea of what is around for future. We supplied a Hase trike to a 13 year old with CP a few months ago.

Excellent info, thanks LB. I've bookmarked it for me and shall pass the link on to the grandparents for their info and future use.

@wfb - that's okay, you just made me realise I'd not phrased it very well...

I met someone recently from Edinburgh Road Club who is hoping to encourage more riders with disabilities to take part in Club events. He said that after last year's Paralympics success he hoped that category prizes, for example, might be introduced at time-trials.

Details are in the Club handbook.
