Council goes Dutch to improve cycle safety at busy roundabout

Plastic lane dividers are one feature of the roundabout design Bedford is to apply to the DfT for a new sign at Zebra crossings. This is one option Bedford Borough Council is to apply Dutch experience to improve cycle safety at a busy roundabout in the town.

Some discussion on twitter as I recall concluded that Dutch only use this design on out-of-town junctions, where cyclists have fully segregated routes outside/under roads. they don't expect cyclists to actually cycle it with cars, lorries etc.

I know that roundabout reasonably well and driving round it is bad enough. There is an attempt to introduce cycle lanes in Bedford, some good quiet roads but some very busy connections to get to them and some really bad drivers. We drive for six hours to get there but max concentration needed just as you come to the end of the route at this and a couple of other roundabouts. Also seen some far out cycling. I feel for some reason that there is quite a bit of toking and driving / cycling ongoing.
