What??? That's scary.
I must have literally just missed this, as I was escorting my kids back from school just minutes beforehand. The school day has recently changed, so kids start slightly earlier, and finish earlier than before.
A brand new secure entry system has been fitted at Abbeyhill over the summer, just in time by the sounds of it.

There have been cases of reports of people carrying guns, whom the police shot dead, only to find in one case that the gun in question was a table leg.

My parents said 3 of the sciences ones were working earlier. The only cars parked had blue badges..........

The signs are up in the Hamilton's (around Duddingston PS and St John's PS) all ready to go live on Tuesday. Lamp posts adorned with 'sleeves' highlighting this imminence.
Saw my first parent doing a three point turn at the entrance to Hamilton Gardens this morning, presumably assuming the pilot had started!Posted 8 years ago # -

BBC has a story up on their FB page asking 'should all schools do this'. So far almost all the comments are positive.

Disappointing first day around St. John's in Portobello/Duddingston. Definitely a big reduction in dropping off around the school gates but still a lot of cars using the street. No police presence but good work by some teachers trying to inform 'offending' parents.
In a nod to stereotypes, one large 4WD drove into the street, straight into the disabled space (no badge/reason) and proceeded to unload small child. Plus ca change.

In spite of it being postponed their as lights not all wired-up.
CEC plans to postpone until after October holiday in spite of problem probably being fixed this week. That might be a mistake.

The signs on Hamilton Gardens (back entrance to Duddingston Primary) didn't seem to be flashing this morning when I passed. Definitely school time as I saw various kids walking about, might have been my imagination, but traffic around us seemed lighter. Will keep a watchful eye on it.

@WC - I heard one of the signs in Duddingston had been vandalised, the antennae was ripped off and it can't be controlled until repaired. Lights were flashing in Hamilton Terrace.

Report from Mrs crowriver is that there were a number of "confused" parents who apparently "didn't know" the restrictions were starting today. Aye right!
Walking buses in operation from four different points surrounding the school, and my children joined one. However they, and the others in that particular "bus" normally walk to school anyway.
We shall see what transpires in the conning days and weeks. I do wonder how long it will take before enforcement becomes essential...

The council forgot to switch on the Hamilton Drive lights this morning. The school got on to them and they were working this afternoon.
A local resident was helping school staff marshal the street, with most visitors respecting the request to about turn - albeit muttering lame excuses about not knowing or falsely claiming to be residents!
Its a start.
It might be easier to "police" if both Hamilton Drive and Hamilton Drive West were made one way streets. It would have meant half the number of light sets too!

Report about this on Reporting Scotland this evening, including great footage of a motorist parked outside a school (Sciennes?) getting pelters from two cycling parents.
Obviously, they had to mention the "inconvenience" for businesses and residents. Also, the odd one that enforcement would be difficult once the police went away. The implication being you just cant't trust motorists to obey the law, or improve safety for children, without the threat of being caught by the police. I suppose that's true, but if I was representing motorists, probably not the argument I would make.

Okay folks, I shall have to amend my previous report. I have been given additional information from Mrs crowriver and my son that there were in fact uniformed police officers patrolling Abbey Street today and issuing warnings to errant drivers who "forgot" or "didn't know" (how hard is it to read a huge sign with flashing lights on it?) that there would be an £80 fine next time.
So a very good start! :-)

@crowriver The "didn't know" excuse is what my Dad always refers to as the 'daft laddie' ruse: "If I get caught, I'll just play the daft laddie and they'll let me off"

I was always taught that ignorance is no excuse in the eyes of the law. I must have tuned out before the addition of "...unless you're driving a motor vehicle."
