    Heroic stuff from that breakaway.

Also, from an email sent in to the Grauniad feed:

“Teklehaimanot, Quemeneur, and Vanbilsen sound like a trio of UN officials sent to chair a Truth and Reconciliation Commission in a former conflict zone. Vanbilsen is a studious Dane with a facility for languages, Quemeneur is a terse French Canadian with a taste for classic cars, and Teklehaimanot is a former Finnish prime minister who raised some eyebrows in Helsinki earlier this year by leaving her husband of 30 years for a female Gender Studies lecturer.”

    Martin down!

  5. Looks like he's back up now (and in the last 800m so will get the same time). My broadband started cutting out with 10km to go so I've only seen snippets grrr!

weird crash. I think he lost his cleat maybe.

  7. Ooh, pushed over the line by his teammates, and holding one arm.... Have heard it was an odd one, guess I'll have to wait for the highlights!

Guardian feed saying helped over by riders from other teams, which is rather nice.

Well, there was some serious confusion at the end there. Czech puncheur Zdenek Stybar came from nowhere to win the stage, which ended in chaos frankly.

Everybody was trying to work out just who it was who had opportunely burst off the front, while the TV cameras were understandably focused on the mess down the road, with Tony Martin and Vincenzo Nibali involved.

Will Martin be able to continue? That must be doubtful.

  10. Have seen the crash, very very strange. Martin seemed to lean over at a non-existent rider, then swerve right into another rider. Certainly he caused the crash.

    Dubious quality youtube video here:

I wonder if he got his front wheel caught behind the rider in front as he was moving right? Held it for a bit, then overbalanced into those to his right.

    Definitely weird.

That is my fantasy team kaput then, unless lars boom can start scoring points? Tony Martin was my big point scorer.

  13. I think you're right Darkerside, there's that little hold then snaps right.

How can the polka dot Jersey only be worth 10 measly points?!

  15. One hell of a day's racing.

Martin's collarbone not just broken, but a compound fracture!

First African to wear the KoM jersey (and yet ITV couldn't bring themselves to show the (short, lovely, online) interview with him on the show because there was 'so much to fit in', which included replaying the interview they had with Mark Cavendish after yesterday's stage which was shown yesterday and twice as long.

Nibbler and Froome falling out, then making up.

Sagan second for the third time.

Cyclocross riders proving they're the best....

I'm watching the rerun on French TV. Agonising.

Oh, yes, I was going to find that interview. Thanks for the reminder W.C.

    So sorry for Tony Martin.

I enjoyed Nibali's response to the question "are you both friends again?":

    "of course. We're not footballers."

Such a shame for Tony M. But he's gone even higher up in my estimation for his behaviour after the crash:
    1) He went to do interviews as soon as he had crossed the line.
    2) In said interviews he took the blame for the crash, not blaming others for his misfortune which is the usual prima donna sportsperson behaviour. [For the record, I'm not convinced it was his "fault" as such; it was just one of those things - two riders up from him, Sagan moved across to the left, which caused Coquard (?), already a fairly dance-y rider, to check his speed and move across TM's front wheel, which flicked Tony's wheel. He almost held it up, but the final front wheel catch just threw him hard onto the ground.]
    3) He went to congratulate Stybar and told him to enjoy his win and not to worry.
    4) He did all his podium duties (including the Tour officials making him put on his fresh yellow jersey - thankfully out of sight as with a compound fracture that would have been horribly painful - think sharp bone edges grinding and stabbing away at tenderised flesh - and not pleasant viewing).

All in all, what a guy!

  20. Stybar too, doing his win interview and then spots Martin coming over and you can see the concern on his face - all of a sudden there's nothing about his win, he just wants to know how his teammate is.

Looking at the crash a few times I'd agree it was 'one of those things'. Certainly started by Martin, in the sense he was the first to go down, but difficult to place fault on anyone.

No-one in yellow today. Martin is still the leader until he doesn't sign-on this morning.

I'm still very very disappointed in ITV for not showing any of the interview with Daniel Teklehaimanot - he was soooooo happy, it was really nice, and so much more interesting and positive than repeating the interview with Cav on why he didn't win the sprint the day before.

I have a feeling the show is edited 'on the fly' during the day. It was probably mostly finished before the end of the race.

Does it have to be 'uploaded' back to the UK broadcaster? Doubt they would be using an ISDN line, though.

  26. I love the fact the Qhubeka part of the team name is an organisation that seeks to provide bikes to people in Africa who otherwise have to walk everywhere. I really want to get hold of their jersey - partly as that'll presumably help fund a little bit, but also cos black and white stripes and Newcastle United and everyfink.

I think that's right. I wouldn't be surprised if all they have to play with by the time 5pm comes round is the last 10 minutes.

I'd like to think they will show Teklehaimanot's interview at the start of today's programme.

    Posted 8 years ago #
  29. No problem with editing on the fly, but Teklehaimanot won the spots roughly three hours before the show went on air (last points were about 30km from the finish?). That's a lot of time in the grand scheme of things.

EDIT: and their twitter feed mentioned another couple of pre-recorded bits that were dropped to cover the race, so presumably they would have slotted in like the Cav interview, so can be pulled, knowing the exact length of the piece....

yes, well, just assume that that is what happens to most stories involving africans on camera, especially with heavy accents (which teklehaimanot's is by eritrean standards).

white guy who everyone recognises or black guy who people will struggle to understand? not a tough choice for our media sadly

On Monday the National did at least run a story about Eritrean refugees in Scotland -- first one that I know of, and i've been trying to stir up interest.
