When lived on buccleuch st, proctors was our local. You could chat to the infamous Hamish Henderson and his dog sandy. The bar staff were civil. Auld toll was good for kindnesses then too. IB looks sad now though loved it back in the day except on modal when the jugglers were in.

All better than canny man due to civility. Though more modest howffs.

Oxford, cafe Royal and Robbies down leith walk should also feature, I also still love the shore bar. These are all very good pubs. Edinburgh is good at pubs.

And "wee Bennets" otherwise known as Bennets of Morningside. Great wee bar and still going AFAIK..

Well that's news to me. I didn't know there were 2 Bennetses. I've always lamented that lack of pubs in M'side.

IWRATS: "I am technically barred. For singing Elvis Costello's My Aim is True as a duet in the early nineties. Was called Proctor's then." New management, I expect the slate has been wiped clean.

Reminds me of when me and the missus were kicked out of Robbies for dancing to Van the Man's Moondance.

    Amen.

Also the Barony Bar. Nearby Cask & Barrel and the Phoenix both good also.

@LaidBack - Argyle is very nice. Spokes has had a couple of functions there and the staff are very helpful.

I've stolen this from Facebook where there's a discussion about best and worst pubs in Edinburgh.

"Best Jingling Geordie's. friendly pub in the centre of town, not many pubs left there now. Worst, The Canny Mans, a pub whose owner felt should reflect his personality, it shouldn't have."

Mathers at the West End is good. A locals' pub that has snuck its way in amongst the more fashionable watering holes of the New Town.

@Aken yes a very good watering hole, west end Mathers. East End Mathers is now called The Empress of Broughton Street don't you know.

@gembo - was in Cumberland bar for sunday lunch (v good) and the Jarl is quite a bit cheaper than Holyrood 9A, IIRC it was £4.00

Cumberland is good. If down that way not far to Kays which is a great bar if a little fruity. On a chiily winter's day the fire is lovely.

Was in Kays bar not that long ago and it was pretty friendly and quite comfortable. Pleasantly busy for a Wednesday evening too. Not too full, just nicely full.

I love how this has turned into a thread about pubs better than the Canny Mans.

On the subject of Jarl, I was in the Royal Okay earlier in the year and was shocked to get change for a tenner in exchange for three pints.

Also need to add Cloisters to the list of great pubs.

"pubs better than the Canny Mans" not a short list :-)

Agree on Cloisters, a favourite of mine too.

I was working/studying in the West Port area a few years and enjoyed a pint or two in the Blue Blazer. Nice little boozer, cozy and a decent selection of ales.

I was working in the West Port area about twelve years ago and was fearful for my life when a colleague decided to have their leaving drinks in the Blue Blazer.

If "at present" is not a stipulation, the Junction before 1996 was always quite pleasant, even to someone freaked out by pubs, alcohol-exacerbated behaviour and socialisation. The Holyrood before 1998 on Tuesday evenings? The Maltings, when the dog wasn't there?

Yep, Blue Blazer is still a good bar.

Holyrood Tavern used to be good, but then it had a makeover to Holyrood 9A and feels like it's trying too hard (with prices to match).

Your antennae need adjusted? Blue Blazer threat-free in my experience. Friendly boozer in fact.

Are we just listing decent bars now?
    Bow Bar, then.

Blue Blazer? Nice wee pub where you could get a toastie and a decent pint.
Bow Bar - good, but about 5 seats.
    Captain's Bar for the music.
    Bert's Bar.
    Nothing good in Dalry.

    Bert's gone?

Digger's is that Shandon or Gorgie? Certainly Dalry Road has a number of dives. This theme continues as the road crosses into Gorgie. Does not pick up if you veer up to longstone or persevere to Murrayburn Silver Wing is it?

Whereas the pubs of leith walk (Robbies) and abbey hill (the artisan, Safari lounge) are better. Shoiuld we focus on pubs near stadiums.

No good bars near Ibrox nor Parkhead. Hielan Jessie's being an oasis on the long and dangerous route back from the east end.back in the day.

The Salutation up at Tannadice where they gently terrorise was good.

    To continue pubs near stadiums?

Nothing of note near Murrayfield. Hampden is also a good pub desert.

The Clep near Dens and Tannadice good.

Remember a Scotland match in 1996 or 97 in Paris - old stadium. There was a pub about 50m from it which was within a police "cordon". We got there early and spent a few hours eating and drinking there in pleasant isolation.

It was like a reverse zoo watching the other side of the cordon!!!

Near Hampden; The Auld Smiddy is a nice enough pub for match day

Paris; a wee Arab bar near the Stade de France (memory fades) that brother and I watched Norway Morrocco in after seeing Scotland lose to Brazil. My kilt may have helped.

    +1 for Robbies

Queens Park Cafe is actually a pleasant bar at the very end of Victoria ROad, still about 15 mins to Hampden

"...in my experience. Friendly boozer in fact."

I've only been there the once, but four well-inebriated people shouting and pointing into each others' faces and doing that thing where they looked round to try and drag other people into their argument set my alarums off, when the only other people in the place was our group. I was comfortable in some surprisingly manky places when I was small but my antenna were recalibrated when I moved up here.

Shall we compromise by both avoiding that group of people in future?

    MODERATORS PLEASE.

@irwats I see no breaches of either rule 1 or rule 2. Going off-topic is surely de rigeur for a CCE thread?
