Thank you so much for attending or supporting our Light Up The Night cycle ride in Edinburgh on Friday 10th December to highlight the urgent need for night time cycling infrastructure that is safe and comfortable for women and girls. We had an amazing turn out of around 170 people.

While the Council has ambitious plans for improving cycling infrastructure, it is important that all councillors understand the strength of feeling and support across Edinburgh on this issue.

We’d be grateful if you could write to your ward councillors this week explaining why you went on the ride and or supported it. You might want to mention a particular route that feels unsafe to cycle on and any on-road improvements that would help.

Ask your councillors to support Transport Scotland’s recently updated Cycling by Design guidance, and to

prioritise safe and comfortable cycle infrastructure, protected from traffic or off-carriageway, on direct well-lit routes
provide well-signed routes which are permeable and always have a way out, not fenced/ walled on both sides, and with good connections to other streets
provide routes which use natural surveillance where possible, for example streets with high footfall

You can find a list of councillors here: https://democracy.edinburgh.gov.uk/mgMemberIndex.aspx?bcr=1

PS - we are planning another women-led night ride in early Spring. Please let us know if you’d like to help out in any way! Contact us at lightupthenightcycleride@gmail.com

We won’t be contacting you again via Eventbrite and we are not retaining your contact details.

    With best wishes,

The Light Up The Night organisers.

Greenroofer, was your daughter a non-pedalling passenger? I saw a bike with such an arrangement, but didn't realise that was you (if it was).

@fimm - yes, my daughter was on the back of our blue Tern. I was wearing a fluorescent beanie. We were stopped opposite you for a while at the Lady Lawson Street/West Port junction, but too far away for me to make contact (and anyway you were doing important marshalling activity at that point).

Editing to add a thought, having read the blog from Kirsty. I realised only part-way through the ride that it wasn't a coincidence that all the potholes round the route had been sprayed to mark them out. It reflects the thought that had gone into the event.
