    I was just reading Dave's kit list. I found the following filed under "First aid / medication" amusing;

    Deodorant

    :)

@Laidback. I think you need a comfy seat and a stiff drink!

He must be somewhere in this group which I think has much more of the spirit of the first riders of this event than perhaps the other departing groups.

    That's the group...
Frightening to see them en masse. The elite Peleton hunted them down like dogs I heard;-)

An Audax Ecosse tandem goes through at 1:24, which I think are a couple from ERC who were going it. I think Dave had similar jersey on, no lid and his dragon fairing box thing. Couldn't spot him.

Goodness, a triplet tandem 24 secs in. That must be a bit hairy on fast descents!

A fair smattering of HPV recumbents too. Puts me in mind of Richard Ballantine enthusing about them in his book.

Well, it's an astounding achievement, far better than anything I could do - well done, Dave! I definitely feel not worthy!

    Wow, that's incredible - thanks!

Thank you all for the kind words of support. Needless to say it was quite an experience and not one I'm sure I'd recommend (although the more days pass, the more I think it was excellent and forget the agony, as you'd expect).

There were almost too many high and low points to list. To be on the road with 5000+ like minded idiots and probably two or three times as many supporters is quite astounding.

Physically I was fine apart from my knees, which were a known danger. I managed quite well but 1230km is a long way and they caved pretty fully by about 900km in, bringing me up short of my transient sub-80 hour aspirations... certainly I was pleased not to have any saddle sores, numb hands or feet, or neck muscles as so many others suffered from.

Must give LaidBack a major shout for lending me a bike to abuse across the north of France for four days. It went flawlessly well and especially given the state I was in, this was pivotal to success (on my own bike, I got about 120km before my knees gave up).

There is much to write and so I will need to have a proper think rather than wittering on - but your support was much appreciated again.

The crazy and incredible world of PBP 2011 continues over on vimeo, with a fantastic film produced by Poisson Lune Films: Paris Brest Paris jusqu'au bout de la nuit.

It's 45 minutes long and worth watching to understand how tough you must have to be, physically and mentally. Chapeau, Dave.

Just watched the video 3 up. I have rarely seen quite so many bikes I'd like a shot on... Also entertaining that no matter how far away the bike, it's obvious what's a recumbent as the flaily bits are at a weird height...

Was Alf from Penicuik. He was on a Challenge Seiran SL bought from LB in 2010. Shame it was out of shot as a rather nice bike and very light.

Was very pleased that both him and Dave made it safely within the time. A fantastic achievement - Dave's PBP shirt is hanging in window of shop at moment.

The film there brought back one of the highlights of 2011. The event was fantastic to follow via twitter and the PBP tracking. French TV also did another documentary covering those that made it and those who just couldn't go on.

Link takes while to load - don't panic! More conventional bikes - hardcore elite that did it very quickly. Chaos at the controls!

What amazes me is that you have guys like Hans Wessel in velomobiles, getting out to Brest in 14 hours, having a sleep, then coming back in another 14 hours. And then you find that some ancien did it in about the same time back in the 1930s riding a steel DF with two gears or something.

In the olden days, they went on the main roads - not so hilly.

It did start before they even had cars, so the surface was probably shocking (although not as bad as Edinburgh!).
