Oh, and I like kappers' hierarchy of bike racks. I'd put the bike hoops and the "triangles" at about the same level: both can have issues with bikes slipping/falling over/pivoting around. Bike stability depends a lot on the type of lock used, and where on the frame/stand it is secured.

Not good grief. A "triangular" rack (where one side of the triangle is "parallel" to the floor) then "some" bicycle "frames", when leant "against" the triangular rack, will only have what is reasonably referrable-to as a "teeny weeny" area of contact between frame and stand. When combined with a "sloping" mounting-surface (e.g. Sainsbury Meadowbank) and/or members perpendicular to the axes of the stands along the ground (by which the stand is thereto attached (which, as kaputnik noted, are often placed where wheels need to touch the ground and create the effect of a sloping surface, though owners of different bicycles may conversely find that these floor-bolted pieces act as chocks to prevent forward/backward bicycle movement)) the likelihood is increased of a bicycle rolling/slipping forwards or backwards sufficiently for the point of contact between rack and frame to no longer be at a point where the bicycle is balanced, resulting in this "pivoting around" of which you are clearly aware. I often find it helpful to remember that most people do not have cargo bikes fitted with twin-pronged stands. In order for the single-prong kickstand on my sparebike to be useful the handlebars have to be angled such that the front wheel is perpendicular to the frame, an arrangement often incompatible with closely-nestled racks.
