“Reporting on the UK as a foreigner often makes it easier to take a step back, to see “the big picture”. Since last Thursday, though, this has become a challenge. The 24/7 coverage of the Queen’s death is all-consuming with layers of events, history and traditions to process. It would not be fair to suggest that these layers are somehow serving to sugarcoat the crisis in this country.

There is clearly warmth between him and Liz Truss, evident when she defied protocol at their first audience by putting a consoling hand on his arm. As a former environment secretary, responsible for his two passions of climate policy and farming, it would be unusual if she hadn’t got to know him reasonably well. But they are still chalk and cheese. Charles has a small-c conservative’s distrust of change, love of beauty, and patrician instincts towards those who are vulnerable; he appears to see his role much like that of a benevolent vicar ministering to his flock. Truss is an unsentimental insurgent, itching to rip everything up and start again.

Today's Guardian podcast has some of the best discussion I've heard about how the Queen's death has been experienced in the former colonies, and the implications for future relations:

Monarchies have sought to divine meaning from protocol arrangements, and are largely underwhelmed by what they have seen.

An expectation that the kings and presidents of the region would board a bus to travel to Westminster Abbey has not been received well. Nor have mooted seating plans that place regional royals and presidents on pews well behind Commonwealth leaders who were an important part of the Queen’s orbit, but are often less influential when it comes to Britain’s trade and security ties.

Clive Lewis, the Norwich South MP and former shadow cabinet minister, said the arrest of anti-monarchy protesters and the condemnation of others who dissented showed that the royal succession “is as much about coercion as consent”.

Astonishing that this segment of The Daily Show did NOT air in the UK.

    It was ENTIRELY CUT OUT.

The british state is banning dissent & comedy about Charles' inadequacies, as a matter of policy.

far more likely self-censorship, rather than the state. More insidious.

Meanwhile, the most right-wing government that Britain has ever had has been using the media distraction of the past week or two as cover to legalise fracking, remove the cap on bankers' bonuses, and issue a slew of new licences for oil and gas exploration in the North Sea so that the profiteering fossil-fuel giants can benefit from years more extraction of the oil and gas reserves that Scotland was told in 2014 were going to run out by 2019. Eight years on and the need for Scottish independence has never been more urgent.

It is but one view but the idea that the last week was the most important event in recent history needs some counterviewpoints.
King Charles will now be signing off bills that will go against his reported 'green' instincts.
Today's National also reports the abuse Patrick Harvie has received by not being deferential enough to the King at Holyrood.
