    Interesting paradox here that I am sure we are all aware of. Wish the decision-makers were as well.

    I don't have my copy in front of me but Tom Vanderbilt includes this analysis in his 'Traffic' book. The conclusion was that humans with a large degree of freewill are essentially non-altruistic in their acts, and therefore the efficiency of (transport) networks is always intrinsically non-optimum, and why traffic jams 'happen'. "Why should I make my journey take more time just so yours can take less?"

    I think Vanderbilt also makes the comparison with ants, who operate with more of a hive mind and miraculously don't get into traffic jams.
