"However, it emerged that 77% of cyclists arriving at the station planned on taking their bikes on the train and 77% of cyclists leaving the station had arrived with their bikes on the train.

Well I expect as there was very poor 'at station' cycle parking, this would make sense. Perhaps if they built some cycle stands, cyclists might use them?

This also says to me at least, they should design trains to be able to hold more bikes, like a guard wagon?

They can put up as many racks as they like, I won't use them for two reasons, 1 I need a bike at both ends of my journey and there is no/insufficient secure parking at the other end. 2 there's no way I'm locking a bike which would cost four figures to replace to a random bike rack then leaving it unattended all day.

@Smudge +1 to using the bike at both ends - and the day when I feel comfortable leaving a bike (even a cheap and nasty one, Dutch style) at Livingston North station overnight is a long way off!

Mind you it has to be said that people do seem to cycle to Haymarket and leave bikes there.

I think for me the 'stress' of leaving a bike at Haymarket (something I did for a year or so) is less than the stress of trying to take a full size bike on the train. Unless you always use a service which you can pretty much guarantee will have space.

Now here's a question - will cyclists get away with taking their bikes on the new escalators?

I do it all the time at Waverley to get to platform 20. No problems so far. The alternative is a very convoluted series of lift journeys starting at the old taxi rank near platform 10 or lugging up the stairs on the other side of the old ticket hall. So escalator it is.

@crowriver that's interesting. I was assuming I'd have to stick to the stairs with my bike (no big deal, that's what I do anyway).

Didn't spot the escalators today, did find the new ticket machines confusing and awkward, did fit the bike into the surprisingly spacious lift with no problems at all.
As to whether to ride from Dalry Rd to the entrance or walk, probably depends on the number of pedestrians at the time :-)

There are a couple of temporary yellow polystyrene signs stating "TAXI STANCE" (one pointing west from the existing jughandle, one pointing right from just across the other side of the road) but they would seem to be pointing towards the tram stop. Half the barrier is missing from the east end of it, too. They wouldn't be using the tram stop as a temporary taxi rank, would they?

Only four taxis in the jughandle today, too.

I don't think the escalators are finished yet... it is one of those nice fudges, it is open, so it has been "opened on time" but it isn't finished (and they're not saying that it is "finished on time...")

There's a sign "rank for 4 taxis" & paint-work at the foot of Dalry Road

I never got any cake :-(

I suppose at some point one of those useful signs that tell you about taxi ranks, bus stops and other such things will appear. There must be a rule that every station must have one - I have a photo of the one at Corrour Station on Rannoch Moor, which doesn't have a road, let alone a bus stop or a taxi rank...

As hinted at in the article, to meet the government target/aspirations/wishful thinking of 10% of journeys by bike would require 10% * 2,000,000 /365 = 548 bike racks!

Passenger numbers for 2012/13 and 11/12 at haymarket were just over 2million according to Wikipedia. And I know there would be higher usage during the week, but this gives another indication of just how far we are from 10% of journeys by bike, given that there are only spaces for 34. So we need at least 16x Moreau!

I'm amused (and a bit sad) to see that National Rail still have the old map of the station on their website (last updated June 2013)

Anyone seen/heard anything more about more bike parking?

Was there today. Covered racks over-full. Ryrie's racks/railings full too -

I heard that the council are planning to install bike parking for 70 bikes outside Haymarket, work starting this week...(!?)

Also in the Spring a big programme of city centre bike parking.

    Let's see...

They (Network Rail, I think) are adding a second tier of covered racks infront of the existing this month, according to tweets from them telling people to remove any abandoned bikes this month before the work.

New racks have been under construction for a while:
    20160210_073603

According to Jimmy the Big Issue seller, they don't have the concrete bits yet. They are coming from Japan??? and won't be here till May. Jimmy jokes that the racks won't be open until they have the concrete for "Health and Safely" reasons. I fear that many a true word is spoken in jest...

Re-reading the thread, I note that two years ago I said:
" It will be interesting to see if most people who come from that side then go in through the old building or go round to the new doors (I should probably do the latter, with the bike)."

Actually I always go in and out through the old building (except on the odd occasion when I want to go one way or the other along Haymarket Terrace).

The bike racks still have orange barriers next to them, but one enterprising cyclist had locked their bike up anyway.
Similar two-tier racks have appeared at Livingston North. I guessed that bike racks were going in, but am surprised at the amount of capacity. (If they think that anyone is going to leave even a beater bike there overnight, they are in for a shock...)

Make sure that if you give one of the upper trays a good yank, it doesn't extend all the way under its own weight. If it hits the hard stop with a bang it can cause adjacent trays to start to extend by themselves.

I've seen this happen at Caledonian Uni in Glasgow and there's a risk of being hit on the head if you pull a tray and then bend down to your bag (or whatever).
