Red Road Flats petition for Commonwealth Games

Slightly off-topic I know but there is growing opposition to making Scotland look foolish in the eyes of the world, despite Ms Sturgeon's misguided view! Hope they close the cycle paths round about when they do decide to do the Big Bang and end an era of high density housing! ps even the original architect's son thinks this was a bad idea and stunt!

I know some people are on about how insensitive it might be to former residents, but frankly the craziest thing is trying to promote this as an event on a level as a grand fireworks display.

If it were Edinburgh hosting, perhaps we could stand and watch as a selfishly-parked BMW is lifted away from the tram tracks :-)

I think it's a great idea, although my opinion is worth no more and no less than even the original architect's son.

Tall building demolitions are probably more popular as a visual event than any grand fireworks display, and it's no less crazy to treat it as such. Bringing down the buildings at the end of their useful life is appropriate, and why not incorporate it into a regeneration theme, which after all is exactly what's happening? In comparison to a fireworks display ... aren't fireworks simply a derivation of weapons of war and destruction?

I don't believe it's insensitive either; some previous residents may get a bit sentimental about it, as we all do at times about events & times in our pasts, but life must go on.

And I'm sure they'll close any cycle paths in the vicinity. Why wouldn't they?

One objection is that the world-wide-audience will miss this subtlety - which may or may not be true/matter.

More important in the actuality, is the pressure to do it at the exact moment and therefore the danger (no pun) that any last minute concerns/delays for good reason will be ignored.

The security cordon will need to be unbelievable - secure.

It only needs one person with a placard saying 'this is not a good idea'...

On the security point, one of the blocks is still in use. Where will those people be during the days before?

I thnk one block went last year? From news footage blown up in the middle, not sure what Fred dibnah would have made of it.?

The refugee/asylum seekers in the remaining block will be moved out.

Blowing something up as a celebration is certainly different. Also thrifty as saves on fireworks as an opening ceremony.

Given the high density living I wonder where the inhabitants of the six blocks have all been dispersed to? Glasgow 's population was decreasing for many years but has bounced up again with migration.

First a U turn on trident. Denied. But now a definite u turn on blowing up the flats as an opening ceremony. Nice to see the SNP being flexible.

Aye, but who's idea was it in the first place? Surely not the Labour run Glasgow City Council?

Newsnicht the evening this idea was first announced was worth watching. Gordon Brewer at his most incredulous.

Sorry I missed that. Gordon brewer starts off at a very high level of incredulity as his normal resting state.

Glasgow 2014 said opinions being expressed about "safety and security" meant the destruction of the flats would not now feature in the opening.

Police Scotland said that because of these concerns the security director for the Games asked the chairman of the Glasgow 2014 board to reconsider the plan.

The Red Road flats' proximity to a railway may have hindered the journey to/from the opening ceremony for a few folk as well.

And as the deputy chief constable said on bbc news -

'If there had been public support we could have secured the site, but things moved on'
