Drivers who are too polite are the cause of lengthy traffic jams, particularly when faced with roadworks or lane closures.

Research by one of the Capital scientist, Dr Guy Walker, found traffic jams can be up to 20 per cent worse because drivers are overly polite.

Radio Scotland "debating" this at lunchtime and entirely missing the point.

    Phrased something along these lines:

"Are you the kind of driver who waits in the queue or do you race up the outside and push in at the last minute?"

If everyone did it properly there wouldn't be a shorter queue to race up.

  3. The only way to do it "properly" is to have only one merge point and take it in turns to merge one at a time. As soon as people start joining the inside queue in more than one place it immediately slows down that lane relative to the outside lane.

Ahhh yes, this annoys Boyfriend as well. He will go up the less used lane if it seems sensible to him to do so. The idea is to have two lanes of queuing traffic, not one long one.

But what does "20% worse" mean? 20% worse than what?
