    Interesting. Boyack has a decent track record, and certainly has more integrity than Murphy. Guardian spin of "unity" candidate seems appropriate.

    May not stop SNP gaining a majority in 2016 but might halt the rot in Scottish Labour.

    With regards to the outcome of the vote, I don’t like to think of it in terms of winners and losers. There was always going to be one side of this impassioned and at times heated debate that was going to be very disappointed but if we accept that the outcome of the actual numbers voting was a triumph for democracy then I believe the campaigners on each side of the debate are winners.
    It is also important to keep in mind that whilst the outcome of the vote was 45% Yes – 55% No, it was 83% of the people of Scotland voting 100% for change. Not only did the three Leaders of the largest Westminster parties promise change but they gave the following timetable;

    ...

    After the resounding defeat of Scottish Labour in 2011 a review was carried out that examined how the Scottish Party was organised and operated. This is perhaps the starting point for a more fundamental review. During the referendum campaign Scottish Labour was found by too many to be guilty by association of being a ‘Unionist’ party and is now perceived as such. In my 30 and more years as a member of the Labour Party I have never considered my self to be a ‘Unionist’ and have never considered Labour as being a ‘Unionist’ party.

    @chdot

    The 'family of nations' thing is a neologism from the HM Government booklet issued this summer to all of Scotchland. I have an outstanding FoI request inquiring as to its origin and legal standing.

    Ms Sturgeon seemed to playing the long game a bit on the radio. No one will ever accept her proposal to divide the EU referendum into four national constituencies, but it's an interseting bit of positioning.

    Could it be that the role of Scottish Labour Leader is not seen as career advancement ;-) ?

    Is a job that does have a fair turnover with few rewards (apart from becoming a Lord for some).

    I do welcome Sarah Boyack putting her hat into the ring though as she does seem to speak calmly without 'scary' stories and table thumping. I could even imagine her agreeing with other parties on such things as the drink driving law (Not heard the Labour line on this yet - is there one?).

    What in the wide, wide world of sports is the BBC up to?

    http://www.theguardian.com/politics/2014/oct/29/bbc-refuses-include-green-party-televised-leader-debates-general-election

    How can they include Farage but exclude Sturgeon and Bennett without accepting that they are taking a nakedly partisan stance?

    Laidback - re drink driving law, from May 2012: 'Scottish Labour Party justice spokesperson ... Lewis Macdonald told the BBC:

    "This is a welcome development and something I called for several weeks ago, so I am delighted that the Scottish Government are in listening mode. We need to get the details right, but the SNP will have our support on the issue as the Scottish Parliament work through the fine print."'

    I think this change was planned to be introduced a year or so ago, but the machines had to be recalibrated to Home Office standards, and Scottish Government couldn't manage that without UK staff.

    Scottish Labour's deputy leader Anas Sarwar has announced he is standing down from his position.

    The development comes after Scottish Labour's leader Johann Lamont announced her resignation last weekend.

    The Glasgow Central MP said he wanted the focus of Scottish Labour's leadership to be on Holyrood.

    The future baronet Osborne is very clever. He doubtless told Cameron to come out with the EVEL stuff on the 19th knowing that would push Scots to abandon Labour. So the Tories keep the oil revenue and run London, which are the two things they care about. Once the oil tails off they'll let us go.

    Perhaps the old political order won’t collapse after all: perhaps “remember that bloke Farage and his real ale?” will be all we say about Ukip in 10 years; perhaps the SNP tide will retreat, the Greens will return to political irrelevance, and first-past-the-post will return to delivering stable majority governments. It hardly seems likely though, does it? Voters are bored with on-message technocrats with no vision, with vacuous political promises that don’t even begin to address the everyday problems of modern life in Britain. Perhaps we’re now witnessing a new order – offering a more diverse range of political ideas and parties – colliding with a defunct electoral system. The warning to Labour’s leaders in London is clear. Your fate in Scotland could well be the harbinger of your future south of the border, too.
