    'Home rule' always sounds like it should be proposed by a moustachioed gent with his thumbs tucked into his frock coat.

    I guess its a step in the right direction.

    Apple is set to borrow cash in euros for the first time in the company's history, taking advantage of record-low interest rates in Europe with what will be some of the lowest-ever interest rates for a corporation.

    And I thought Apple was 'cash rich'.

    Obviously not enough governments borrowing to invest in 'infrastructure'.

    Apple is cash rich, but much of it is held overseas. They would face a big tax bill if they brought that cash back into the US, so it's effectively "locked".

    There have been previous tax amnesties in the US to allow companies to bring such cash back to the US.

    Brilliant, innit? Borrowing cheap QE funny money to avoid paying tax on your very real cash pile.

    In the latest Ipsos MORI Scotland poll for STV News, Ipsos MORI found that the SNP party has a strong lead over Labour in voting intentions for Holyrood. Among those who told us that they would be ‘certain’ to vote in an immediate Scottish Parliament election, 57% say they would cast their constituency vote for the SNP, while 23% would back Scottish Labour, 8% would vote for the Scottish Conservatives and 6% for the Scottish Liberal Democrats. This gives the SNP a 34-point lead over Labour.

    It continues: "In terms of the party list vote for the Scottish Parliament, among those certain to vote, 50% would back the SNP while 23% would back Scottish Labour, 10% the Scottish Greens, 8% the Scottish Conservatives and 6% the Scottish Liberal Democrats."

    Remember we have two votes at Holyrood elections: the Greens generally only stand on the list (though that might change).

    An analysis of the figures suggested the SNP would win 75 seats, giving it a clear majority at Holyrood, followed by Labour on 31 seats, the Greens with ten, the Tories on seven and the Lib Dems six.

    Mark Diffley, director at Ipsos MORI Scotland said: “These findings chime with voting intentions for the Westminster parliament and confirm the strong position that the SNP is currently in.

    Of course this election is more than a year away, but it's clear we (still) live in interesting times.

    It seems 'you lost, get over it' isn't playing well in Scotland. I don't know if Jim Murphy ever said those words, but he actually said a lot worse about 'his' electorate before and after the Referendum.

    Electing him (which they probably will) will send out a powerful message from the Labour Party to the populous (for anyone who wants to listen.)

    If you drill down into the demographic data in the Ipsos MORI poll (detailed report linked to above) it is fascinating. On this evidence, what we traditionally think of as Labour's "core" vote has shifted massively to the SNP: I'm talking about poor people and public sector workers here (some will be both of course).

    Also striking is the high proportion of support for Labour, Lib Dems, Tories coming from retired people. In contrast Greens have a more youthful profile. SNP support quite broad based. Urban/rural divide interesting too.

    I shall make it my life's work to wipe out the term 'Scottish Labour' in the electoral context. There are thirteen Scottish political parties;

    All Scotland Pensioners Party
    Free Scotland Party
    Scotland Against Crooked Lawyers
    Scottish Democratic Alliance
    Scottish Green Party
    Scottish Jacobite Party
    Scottish Libertarian Party
    Scottish National Party
    Scottish Socialist Party
    Scottish Unionist Party
    Scottish Voice
    Solidarity - Scotland's Socialist Movement
    The Scottish Reformists' Party

    and 'Scottish Labour' is not amongst them.

    That's a strong internal review line you have at Ipsos Mori. I think I approve. ;-)

    Talking to a psephologically clued-up friend last night. He thinks that if a general electoral pact can be organised between the Scottish parties then the seat that should be allocated to the Scottish Greeens to contest is the one I live in - Edinburgh South. There's a campaign I'd willingly put my back into.

    On my cycle in today along the crisp and wintery canal I took delight in composing the playlist for the tricycle-mounted sound system I would construct for such an event in May. Imagine Ian Murray's ire as his canvassing is constantly serenaded by a mixture of;

    * The Dance of the Cuckoos
    * Land of Hope and Glory
    * Who Do You Think You Are Kidding, Mr. Hitler?
    * The Imperial March
    * Rule Britannia

    Unite has this week conducted a poll of members in Scotland, finding that 78% would prefer the leader to be a member of the Scottish Parliament. Worryingly for Labour, they also found that 54% who voted Labour in 2010 do not expect to do so again in 2010.

    @IWRATS - You seem to have forgotten to mention;
    * as President of the NUS, dropped opposition to abolition of the Student Grant to fall in line with NuLabour policy (contrary to NUS policy decision). He was conveniently revolved straight out of the NUS door into a paid job with Scottish Labour Labour in Scotland and a NuLabour-friendly seat in which to stand.
    * claimed on expenses for rent on a property in London, while simultaneously renting out a property in London he owned, thereby personally profiting by pocketing the difference (estimated at ~£20,000)
    * "flipped" his constituency home to designate it a second home, enabling him to pocket £780 a month for mortgage interest on it
    * ordered to pay back £3,500 of a £4,800 claim for a new toilet
    * claimed £2,000 of parliamentary expenses to pay his accountants to do his private tax returns

    The main punishments for this former "rising star" for his "I was working within the letter but not the spirit of the rules" expenses indiscretions appear to have been the toilet payback (small change for a man who has claimed over £1,000,000 from the taxpayers in the last 10 years) and being forced into the shadow cabinet wilderness for a few years of light purgatory before a miraculous rehabilitation as the potential saviour of Scottish Labour Labour in Scotland.

    and being forced into the shadow cabinet wilderness for a few years of light purgatory

    That was simply a consequence of backing the wrong horse brother in the leadership race, wasn't it? So really just the toilet payback.

    Did the £3,500 element relate to not wholly necessary cosmetic features, hence the requirement to payback? £1,300 should still get you a good-looking bog anyway.

    You seem to have overlooked his being condemned by name for his dictatorial conduct whilst NUS president in an Early Day Motion in the House of Commons.

    I shall vote for him to become Labour McNabob forthwith and as many times as possible.

    "and as many times as possible"

    'Vote early, vote often'.

    Seems to be legal with this electoral system!

    Surely all Labour MPs should have a vote - it's a UK party.

    A toilet fit for Murphy's droppings costs £11,400;

    http://gb.toto.com/products/product-single-view/Product/show/NEOREST_AC_WASHLET/

    It is remote controlled. We should thank him for his financial continence in only spending one tenth of the adequate and proper sum.

    Was Salmond jealous of Brown, Darling, Cameron, Clegg, the Blairs (Mr and Mrs), and even Lance Armstrong, all of whom had effigies by Bonfire Societies before he was? Or just glad of an excuse for more publicity and distraction from important issues?

    I guess his effigy will just be left to rot in the wilderness then.

    Although it seems one of them may have been blown up rather than burnt.
