@shvas, I know the chap Bryan who has just inherited the brief, following some staffing issues. He is fast runner, good cyclist and quick worker so I think he will get things moving. PM me if you still want to email direct etc.

Thanks @gembo, i spoke to Bryan today and i've been reassured that this will be happening. No major departure from the original designs at this point, except that they are now hoping to make Tarvit Street car free right down to Drumdryan Street. I've asked them to look into connecting the path to the school entrance on West Tollcross.

According to a Scottish Canals person:

The cobbled quay section between Leamington Bridge and the basin, on the north side of canal, is to be resurfaced with granite sets. At the end of the basin itself, there is to be a route across in repaved granite sets to the link to Lochrin Place.

(Hopefully, they will be flat-topped and well laid)

spotted a few people waiting for the lift bridge to come down this week.

    Holday barges being hired perhaps.

I avoid that section as it is too bumpy. Hope they are quicker than the path chaps of Boroughmuir.

Is this ever going to be built?

As it happens I asked Cllr Claire Miller about this yesterday and she tells me "delivery of the project is expected 2018/19'. Detailed design will be outsourced. There are a lot of improvements for people walking at stake too, hopefully to implement actions from the 2015 Tollcross street audit.

So we've gone from 'construction in early 2016' to 'delivery in 2018/19' (maybe)? Woeful.

"I asked Cllr Claire Miller about this yesterday and she tells me "delivery of the project is expected 2018/19'."

Clearly good that she's been asking questions.

I wonder if she has asked why it's slipped so much and more importantly whether it can be re-prioritised.

"Detailed design will be outsourced" - because CEC doesn't have the staff.

Given the amount of money that CEC has to spend on cycling (10% budget) it ought to have the confidence to employ more staff who might be able to spend it more effectively.

"There are a lot of improvements for people walking at stake too"

It's important that 'we' don't forget this.

There have been many threads/posts on CCE about the need to make sure that improvements for cycling don't come at the expense of pedestrians.

Unfortunately, too often, CEC has designed inappropriate "shared use" schemes rather than take road space or be seen to disadvantage the use of private cars or impede 'traffic flow'.

There's a CCE thread - Shared Use - the debate begins for that.

I'm confused - I thought the canal was a sacrosanct monument to industrial heritage or summat. At least, that was alwsys the excuse when bridge or path widening was suggested?

    So did I!

Scottish Canals obtained scheduled monument consent to replace the current cobbles (only laid in 2000!) with ones similar to those by the new Boroughmuir.

Looks like a section of wrist jangling, teeth rattling cobbles will remain in the section of towpath after Edinburgh Quay though. Just the sort of Presbyterian thinking I like - we'll make it nicer for cyclists to use this section of the canal. Just not too nice though, or they might start getting ideas above their station - so we'll leave the worst section untouched.

This might work for me heading east, cross lift bridge, avoid cobbles, cut back over these new flatter cobbles and back to akva.

@gembo - you and many others I reckon. Downside is you miss the (occassional) bike counter.

@laidback my commute never registers on the counter as I swing down to the left just before it to avoid the cobbles, setts and pave.

Ooh. I will certainly investigate changing my west-bound commute as soon as these are in place. Turning right from Tavit Street and then left onto Lochrin Place should be a general improvement when compared to going 'straight' onto Gilmore Place and then right onto Lower Gilmore Place or Leamington Road. I will probably wait for the rest of the new infrastructure to appear before changing my east-bound commute; I don't like turning right out of Lochrin Place.

Dismount. Walk up the pavement past the shops to the King's junction. Cross diagonally on the green man. Remount.

    It's quicker than cycling it...

@nedd1e_h I think I would be frustrated by the idea of dismounting but I might give that a try at some point.

    @jdanielp

I find the key to less stressful urban cycling is knowing when to dismount (even when it seems like defeat).

Plus, it "shows*" people where the infra is bad

    *Assuming anyone notices.

According to CEC's active travel programme, the Meadows - Union Canal project is still "awaiting resource" (for the detailed design stage).

Them comes the secondary consultation, TRO creation, construction.

Make of that what you will.

Might be worth sending comments to support this, to counter any possible objections.

I cycled over where the Worst Cobbles In Edinburgh used to be and can confirm that the area is now nice and smooth :-)

If they're proposing similar treatment to the other side of the canal I guess I should go and support that too.

    @fimm

Sorry, but the planning app isn't for the North side just yet :(

It only covers the eastern end where the new student residences have gone up. Sorry, it's a bit disappointing...

So, 3+ years after the original consultation opened, a new public consultation on Meadows - Canal is about to go live...

    Soon...

I do believe that the Meadows to Canal route is gathering momentum, progressing and the designs are similar to those prepared in 2014.

I am hopeful that there are some good aspects in this design.

It is close to going to a second round of consultation...
