After his latest "average speed cameras in my back yard are bad" comments regarding the A9, Danny "can't we dual it faster and wider" Alexander is today giving a speech "to urge petrol and diesel distributors to cut prices further".

"The public have a suspicion that when the price of oil rises, pump prices go up like a rocket. But when the price of oil falls, pump prices drift down like a feather."
"While no research supports this, the thought of this effect creates ill feeling", he will say.
Of course Mr Alexander is overlooking the fact that the cost of crude oil is only one part of the equation when it comes to cost of petrol/diesel, and if the former falls by 25%, the latter will only ever come down by ~6% as his department is responsible for the (fixed) duties that are a major component of the pump prices.
But why let the facts get in the way of some more pro-motoring populism - even where no research supports this?
