I have started to make random interventions of kindness and welcome to EU citizens. Told the French couple in front of me in the supermarket buying a frying pan that they were welcome and that this is their country as much as mine. #frogbotherer

Don't worry. The UK was AAA in September 2008 just before its last débâcle. They've no idea what they're talking about.

What a flabbergasting result! The England bodies are dumped on the ground, Gary Cahill is in tears.

The Iceland players run to their fans to celebrate. What a momentous win for Iceland, what a huge result in Euroepan football!

Seismic. Fair play to the men in blue. They defended heroically.

How I wish I could have said that on Friday morning...

Woy for PM? Call me Dave for England Football Manager? Would there be any noticeable difference?

    I used to get myself psyched up for canvassing in 2014 with some English folk music;

But I can't, and frankly don't want, to hide my glee at that nation's discomfort. I'm having to apologise to strangers for their bigotry.

    Well yes but

Not everyone born/living there (or here) that is/isn't bigot (etc.)

Not all the England (or Rangers) supporters end up singing dubious songs or taking part in violence - they're just the ones who make the 'news'.

Having said that, there does seem to be a post-vote increase in unpleasant race-related incidents.

Hence my inclusion of Billy Bragg, the greatest living Englishman. England's Jaques Brel if you will.

But historical forces aren't atomic forces. I can feel the tide of displeasure heading England's way as well as anyone. I was just on the phone with a friend who's a diplomat with a non-EU country. 'No one likes them, and no one can quite figure out why.' quoth he.

For the record re post-referendum "unpleasantness", I regularly pick up litter and generally tidy up Lochend Park. Generally once a week. Yesterday we removed six stickers for a neo-Nazi group, as well as rubbing off a swastika daubed on a bin. Now this isn't entirely isolated as there was "White Power" daubed on the slide recently and "Combat 18" painted on a couple of the fences.

I saw Earthowned tweeting that he had removed National Front stickers from bins in the Kirkgate too, so it's not entirely isolated.

I did email my ward councillors yesterday evening and while the national government appeared to implode it was somewhat heartwarming to get 2 of the 3 reply on a Sunday evening (the third got back to me this morning). A council squad gave the park a once over this morning to remove anything else and the local police inspector made aware.

Anyway do keep your eyes open and report / remove anything you see of this sort of thing. In all likelihood it's a couple of sadcases who are probably getting kids to do their pathetic work for them, but it spreads fear, disquiet and uncertainty - particularly in neighbourhoods with high populations of Poles, Spanish and other nationalities (who all get along pretty harmoniously).

Despite the exclusion of Billy Bragg, that really is quite offensively tar-brushing I'm afraid (I can understand entirely glee at England being knocked out of international football tournaments, but off the back of that to then brand us all (save for Billy Bragg) as bigots is a little beyond 'banter').

It's a difficult thing to express right enough and any attempt I make is going to be wrong and clumsy. England has gone awry somewhere. I desperately want to see it fixed if for no other reason that it's home to a number of bewildered friends.

I'm not joking when I say I feel shame - proper tearful shame - as a result of this vote.

    Posted 8 years ago #
  19. It certainly has. Just don't think it's helpful to label everyone from there as a bigot - after all a large percentage did vote to remain.

As is so often the case, I'm just glad my folks moved to Scotland when I was but a bairn and there's at least a glimmer of hope we can dig ourselves out of this. But I fear for the country of my birth.

The National printed an Iceland flag in the centre spread. Thought that was a bit petty though I really like Iceland doing well as they had a tough time with their economy.

The England team are hampered with too many millionaires. Bit like the Tory cabinet.

Another note of support from across the North Sea. "Thanks for your explanation. I and most people over here find it not a wise decision what they did.
I hope you can stay in the EU."

Disappointed to see that STV Tonight ignored Angus Robertson's exchange in Commons with PM. Instead we had Jackson Carlaw hoping that Scotland could help with civil service manpower sorting out the mess that his selfish party has caused. Ruth and Co won't back Nicola as she's being a bit too assertive and they're sure she's wasting her time as EU will want punish everyone on the SS UK equally. Then Michael Forsyth gave his irrelevant view. Media should look to the future now and ignore these relics!

I'm also worried that the Tories desperation for currency backing might have an unacceptable payback cost.

The mayor of London has issued a statement clarifying that he cannot make a UDI in respect of that city.

    Key quote for me;

Whitehall is remote even to Londoners. The lesson of last week’s vote is that people want to be listened to.

    Ouch.

My Twitter, largely filled with cycley academicy clever types, is making me depressed every time I open it due to the propensity of these people to also care strongly about how stupid leaving the EU is.

It just makes me angry at the whole situation :(

"and you thought things couldn't get any worse!"

Like thinking that Farage couldn't get any worse then hearing about his jolly wee jibes at MEPs, or preparing for the worst from the abhorrent slate of prospective candidates to be Captain Tory/possible Prime Minister then seeing that Jeremy Hunt might join in, or seeing that Oliver Letwin has been allowed out again for this task force thing. At least on the day of the result on Friday there was a steady stream of perfectly-pitched internet humour to lessen the initial blow.

Churchill’s grandson tweeted: “Gave Boris Johnson proper stick during campaign but only one way ahead now. Boris will be great PM.#GoBozza."

In this brave new Machiavellian world, I can't help but think that a number of Conservative MPs are expressing support for Boris Johnson in the full hope that he is hoist with his own petard, and quite possibly left dangling from a petrol station roof.
