    I doubt they'll ignore it, but who they back....

    Good thing about the EU is that it runs on rules and consensus, so I guess they're consulting their members. Bad thing about the EU is it's a big boys' club so I guess they're tempted to back nation states over citizens. We shall indeed see.

    "The fact that even Remainers keep exhorting the EU “not to punish us” demonstrates just how incapable the English are of reckoning with anyone else’s point of view."

    Maybe some English / some Britons? One Dutch view - contents may depress. Prospect Url

    This is just one view but after NL visit it has some interest. No offence intended to anyone as Edinburgh / Scotland / Our business / relies on diversity.

    Concluding paragraph -

    The one real alternative is that Britain reverses course, gets on its knees, and begs to be let back in. This could be the most dangerous outcome of all. While the imagination of many “Leave” voters remain in the grip of the tabloids, any concession to the reality of national interests risks inflaming rage and cries of betrayal. As for the EU, it is first and foremost a rule-based organisation. If the rules around Article 50 were bent to allow Britain back in on special terms, then the whole edifice is undermined. Scotland should be let in if it wants, and Northern Ireland too. But England is out and must be kept out—at least until it has resolved its deep internal problems. Call it nation building.

    The UK under the current 'non leadership' will not only use up billions of pounds to try and mitigate the negative Brexit effects but also drain any reserve of 'goodwill' with our European friends (aka 'enemies' to the non-negotiators). That's assuming there was any goodwill in first place!

    Scotland and N. Ireland will of course try to re-connect in some way but as we are part of 'the problem'. I don't think we can expect favours from over the North Sea as the settlement is likely to leave all parties poorer and feeling let down.
    A textbook example why the Tories are surplus to requirement. Whether the followers of Corbynism can somehow rescue rUK remains to be seen. In Scotland the Labour party have to sort out the leadership question.

    This is the thin gruel from today's Joint Ministerial Committee. A page of names, a page of hand-waving and a blank page.

    Nice article. Spotted my first Mango bike the other day - done up in the livery of Student Castle I guess it was a fleet bike.

    Extraordinarily poor build quality - cheap components mounted squint on a welded frame where you could see the undercoat through the top coat. Not likely to last two winters. [Insert Brexit analogy here.]

    In case we're not all au fait with Ms Wolf's thesis;

    Pretty bleeding obvious here and now though.

    @iwrats, Naomi Klein has made career out of stating the obvious but Good I think that she does.

    I translated in 1988 an MSC thesis, well I say translated, I mean polished the English of a dissertation on how The Anglo Iranian Oil Company stole the oil rights from the democratically elected govt. of Iran in 1950s whilst that govt. was destabilised.

    You will perhaps know that Anglo Iranian changed their name to British Petroleum

    Chandler is described by many as a “disaster capitalist” – his firm invests in unstable markets when “assets” can be bought cheaply. “Opportunities arise in times of crisis,” states the group’s corporate profile, adding that the “firm finds value where disruptive transitions create unique opportunities.”
    And you can’t get much more disruptive than Brexit.

    This is a fairly simple proposition for voters to understand. The proportion of people telling YouGov that they think Brexit talks are going badly has risen from 34 per centr in March to 64 per cent. By a narrow margin, more people now think it was wrong to leave the EU. I’m sure you’ve felt it too – a lot of us are scunnered with Brexit.

    A reluctance to call for a halt to Brexit has created a “huge hole” at the heart of Scottish politics, an EU expert has warned.

    Worry not. I know a guy who knows a guy who knows Macron. I've arranged for Scotland to become a Département et région d'outre-mer de la République française at 24h00 on the 29th of March 2019. It was all pre-agreed in Schedule 5 of the Auld Alliance Agreement anyway but I've just speeded things up a bit over a pint.

    There are consequences of course. Article 2 of the constitution provides that French is the language of the republic so CCE becomes VEV and I become @JARAPDCS. You become @indemne. This is all embedded in BBPress and you need do nothing.

    All Scotsmen will become splenetic dipsomaniac depressives. No one will notice this. All Scotswomen will also become splenetic dipsomaniac depressives but with a base tan and a way with vegetables. Everyone will notice this.

    Other changes to note;

    * All floors to be tiled
    * All wallpaper to become inexplicably hideous
    * All hills to triple in size
    * All flat bits to become infinitely big
    * All cyclist to own at least one Peugeot Competition Classic

    Can we turn all the castles pale yellow and make every shop shut on Monday? Maybe just every shop within walking distance of a campsite.

    Noted. I'll shut all the shops between 12h00 and 14h00 too if you like?

    I'm worried about logistics, can we realistically convert the whisky distilleries to brandy in the given time frame? How will we get sufficient volumes of wine to distribution centres without closing Grangemouth and using the oil landing facilities?

    Well, I'm comforted. And @indemne is certainly better than @unhorsed.

    a way with vegetables Goodness. The possibilities.

    @steveo A.G. Barr will be nationalized and repurposed. Reinstate the glass returnables, use for wine distribution.

    Part of the malaise is due to Brexit – the UK cycle industry is dependent on imports and therefore takes a hit when the pound plunges – but there's also a global downturn in bicycle sales with even traditionally strong cycling markets, such as the Netherlands, suffering from uncharacteristic falls. Nevertheless, it's the UK which is suffering from the greatest decline of bicycle sales in Europe.
