    MOST people in the UK will soon oppose Brexit because of “relentless” demographic changes, according to a new academic report marking one year to leaving the EU.

    Published by The UK in a Changing Europe thinktank, it says rising education levels, ethnic diversity and generational change are all pushing public opinion in a pro-European direction.

    Turns out Ms May went to Begg & Co in Ayr for an hour. I would boil with resentment if any employer of mine used me as room meat for a political stunt.

    If she wants to hear what folk have to say then set up a stall in the high street.

    @iwrats: The UK has absolute control in respect of non-EU nationals. In respect of EU nationals it is allowed by EU law to remove non-UK EU nationals not having found work after three months, not having health insurance, having committed crimes and so on.

    They don't do that because it needs a competent bureaucracy and they don't have or want one.

    The department which is responsible for that is, of course, the Home Office. And we know who was in charge of that for six years prior to the referendum, and completely failed to achieve any of the immigration targets that her party had promised over that time, don't we children? Yes, it was the Right Honourable Mrs "do more with less" herself. (I wish she could just manage to do one. If you see what I mean.)

    Bizarrely it would appear that the UK of GB&NI has failed to give notice to the EU27 and the EFTA members of an intention to quit the Eurpean Economic Area under Article 127 of the Agreement on the European Economic Area.

    They have to give twelve months' notice, so it seems there will be a period where they are in the EEA but outside the EU which is....odd.

    'Jane disowns Peter'

    The UK of GB&NI has found its motto for 2018.

    BBC's Soft Border Patrol is gently amusing.

    It's pretty much Scot Squad set in Ireland.

    But Iain Whyte, leader of the Tory group on the city council, insisted there were “real opportunities for Edinburgh” from Brexit. “I still have a great deal of hope about what can come from Britain leaving the EU,” he said.

    From the Hootsmon article;

    They welcomed the UK government commitment that EU nationals already living here will be able to stay and work

    The parlous state of our press;

    1) I am an EU national
    2) No commitment in regards to non-UK EU citizens has been made by HMG. None.
    3) No commitment has yet been made even in respect of Irish citizens guaranteed not just freedom of movement but absolute civil equivalence with UK citizens by section 2(1) of the Ireland Act of 1949.

    Edinburgh South Labour MP Daniel Johnson

    No, that would be the Edinburgh Southern Labour MSP.

    "It’s time for Edinburgh to stop listening to doom-mongers and look for opportunities.”

    I couldn't agree more with the Conservative Councillor. Not just Edinburgh, the whole of Scotland should stop listening to doom-mongers and look for opportunities. He's quite right there. Nivir mind fit the hoodies croak fir doom.

    The Scottish parliament's attempt to protect the settlement laid out in the Scotland Act 1998 is being challenged by the Lords of Misrule in the supreme court.

    The London parliament can ultimately make whatever laws in Scotland it wishes. The interesting circumstance comes about should the supreme court rule the UK Withdrawal from the European Union (Legal Continuity) (Scotland) Bill to be law. It can be over-ruled any time, but the political price of so doing may be high.

    One of the interesting parts of this debacle has been learning just how important Ireland has been in 'British' politics for the last eight hundred years. It was only recently that I learned that the name of the party of government here - the Conservative and Unionist Party - actually refers to the 1801 union with Ireland.

    Anyway, it looks increasingly like Irish matters may cause some severe headaches for all of us over the next forty eight weeks.

    Ejection from the EU with no alternative arrangements in place will not be amusing I don't think, but the compromises required to secure such arrangements seem outwith the capacity of the London government.

    WARNING: HATE SPEECH SITE

    An actual member of the Mother of Parliaments talking about what was until ninety-seven years ago an integral part of his country, whose citizens are to this day legally entitled to civic parity with citizens of the UK;

    It is now up to the UK to come up with its vision for the future.

    Fairly terrifying speech by Michel Barnier yesterday. Seemingly not reported in the UK press, oddly.

    The London government is being instructed to start actually governing or face a chaotic exit from the EU in three hundred and thirty nine days. Start stockpiling brake blocks, chains and cassettes?

    While economists differ on many matters, one thing they can agree on is that taxing the revenues or capital gains derived from Costa Rica’s land won’t cause the land to move away.

    Nice.
